Choosing to pursue dementia care for your loved one is never easy. There are many different memory care facilities that offer a variety of benefits. With that said, we invite you to keep the following tips in mind to help you choose the best dementia care for the special person in your life. 

Scout Each Facility’s Website 

When you begin the search for the perfect memory care facility for your loved one, the internet is the best place to start. Most, if not all, dementia care facilities have websites that offer extensive information about their communities, amenities, and services. 

You know your loved one best, so look for things that will stand out to them immediately. For example, if your loved one enjoys swimming and water fitness, make sure your prospective facilities have pools for residents. If a memory care facility’s website looks promising, go ahead and schedule a tour. 

Visit in Person: Take a Tour

Dementia care communities offer tours, so you can get a feel for the place your loved one may end up staying. Take advantage of that opportunity, as tours can give you a detailed look into how the facility is managed as well as its general atmosphere. 

When in-person tours are not possible, some communities offer virtual tours, which allow you to scope out the facility from the comfort of your home. 

Lastly, if at all possible, you should bring your loved one along for the tour. Their opinion matters most, and if they are lucid enough to chime in on each facility, let them.

Prevent a Diabetic Coma before It Happens

A diabetes-related coma occurs when the body’s blood sugar levels become dangerously high or low causing a person to lose consciousness and require emergency medical treatment. If left untreated, the consequences can be deadly.  

Two events can lead to a diabetes-related coma. The first is when a person becomes hypoglycemic, meaning their blood sugar levels drop below 54 mg/dL. Experts say the person does not get enough blood sugar for the brain’s most basic needs and body functions start to shut down.

The other extreme is excessively high blood sugar called hyperglycemia, and defined as blood sugar levels of 300 mg/dL or higher. When this happens, the kidneys cannot function properly and begin to shut down.  

Experts say there are several causes for either hypo- or hyperglycemia induced comas. If you use insulin, you may be taking too much or too little. In addition alcohol can lower a person’s blood sugar as can suddenly increasing the amount of exercise a person does. Blood sugar dips or highs can occur from skipping meals or not eating. Certain medication such as steroids or getting sick can also change a person’s blood sugar levels. 

Common symptoms of hypoglycemia induced comas are confusion, lightheadedness and fast heart rate. The person may feel sweaty, tired and/or hungry as well as complain of a headache. Comas brought on by hyperglycemia include abdominal pain, dry mouth, urinating more and nausea and vomiting. The person may complain of feeling tired and shortness of breath. If you are diabetic, it is important to see your doctor regularly and to learn as much as you can about managing your diabetes.

The Age-old Question: When Does “Old Age” Begin?”

Defining what age people are considered “old” seems to have more to do with who you ask. In one survey by U.S. Trust, millennials (defined as those between 21 and 36) said a person is old at around 59, while Gen Xers (those 37 to 52), thought old age begins at 65. Older folks including boomers (age 53 to 72) and the silent generation (73 and older) agreed old age doesn’t even start until you are at least 73 years old.   

On the other end of the spectrum, when each group was asked when one’s “youth” ends, millennials thought it was at age 40. Gen Xers and boomers said 31, and the silent generation felt one’s youth comes to an end at around 40.  

The AARP’s Disrupt Aging campaign wanted to see if perceptions change in regards to old age when people connect with those they consider old. The experiment began by inviting a group of millennials to meet and interact with a group of people in the age group the millennials had described as old. After spending time with the vibrant seniors, the Disrupt Aging campaign found the millennials had a change of heart in regards to thinking old age automatically meant a decline in abilities. 

In another study of Australia’s clinical settings, researchers concluded it is more accurate to describe older adults as “elderly based on physical health and medications rather than chronological age.” They found being elderly may be more of a feeling rather than just a number. Studies also find aging adults prefer the word “senior,” “senior citizen” or “older adult” better than elderly.

Why Seniors are at Higher Risk of Falling

When an older adult trips and falls, it can be life-changing. Consequences include serious head injuries, hip fractures and broken bones, and in the worst cases, fatalities. The publication Senior Safety Reviews report approximately 2.4 million seniors will be treated in emergency rooms for these types of injuries this year. Further, more problems can arise as many seniors need several months to recover, which can cause a decline in strength and mobility as well as a mental agility. It can also lead to the loss of independence and isolation. 

Statistics show most falls happen for a handful of reasons and being forewarned may help prevent one. The environment, especially the person’s home and surrounding outdoor area is one of the biggest culprits. Danger spots include slippery bathtubs, high mattresses, steep stairs, poorly lit hallways, loose rugs, obstacles in walkways and clutter. Experts say a little bit of time spent addressing these problems with things like non-slip bath mats and grab bars, more lighting, removing clutter, etc. can help prevent a fall. 

Another risk factor for a fall is chronic health conditions that affect balance and mobility. Arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure can mean a person might experience dizziness or be unable to control muscles to stop a fall. 

Growing older also puts us at risk for diseases like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, which in turn, leads to more accidents. Solutions include having yearly eye exams and making sure your eyeglass prescription is up-to-date.

Experts say it is important for seniors to stay as fit as possible as aging affects muscle strength, flexibility and coordination. Check with your doctor for information on balance and strength exercises. If a medication is making you dizzy or drowsy, talk to your doctor about it. There may be another drug just as effective and doesn’t have the same side effects.

The Link Between Gum Disease and Increased Risk of Alzheimer’s

Researchers at Tuft University reported a link between gum disease, also known as periodontitis and periodontal disease, to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontitis is a bacterial infection within the soft tissue of the mouth, and “about 47.2% of U.S. adults over 30 and 70% over 65 have gum disease,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 

The study, which was done with mice, discovered the correlation, but researchers hope the findings can be used to someday help reduce cases of Alzheimer’s disease. The authors cite Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a bacterium that causes gum disease and is already linked to kidney disease, diabetes and coronary problems to be the problem. 

The lead author, Dr. Jake Jinkun Chen, professor of periodontology and director of the Division of Oral Biology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine explains the purpose of the study is to identify and characterize the association of induced periodontal disease with Alzheimer’s disease. He says as F. nucleatum generates “inflammation both locally and systemically, it affects the Alzheimer’s disease phenotype, as Alzheimer’s itself is an inflammatory disease.” Additionally, since the bacteria migrate and penetrate the brain, it can worsen the symptoms and signs of Alzheimer’s disease. 

Researchers plan further studies in humans and say although there is not a proven link yet; good oral health benefits our overall health. They also say to decrease our risk for Alzheimer’s, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.

Strength Training Exercises for Seniors

Strength training is an important way that seniors can maintain their mobility; range of motion; and of course, strength. However, it is important to understand that not all seniors can do every exercise; so start small. Even the smallest stretches and exercises can be built off of to get results. Here are a few perfect strength training exercises for those living in senior housing in Everett, WA. 

Dead Bugs

This exercise is very simple, and will require enough room for everyone to lay down on their backs. Then, everyone should raise their arms straight up into the air, while lifting their legs up with knees bent. Fingers should be pointing to the ceiling, and shins should be making a little table. Keep in mind that everyone should just be doing what they can, so they are not overextending themselves. The next step is to straighten and lower the left leg while also laying the right arm down and back so that it is reaching over the head. Finally, return to the original position, and repeat with the right leg and left arm. Repeat this process as many times as everyone is able. Dead bugs are a great way to work on coordination, core strength, and overall balance. 

Toe Stands

Toe stands are a perfect, easy exercise that can help strengthen the ankles and calves. This can help with balance, as well as improve steadiness while walking. To practice toe stands with seniors in assisted living in Everett, start by giving everyone a sturdy chair. Have everyone face the back of their chair, and place their hands on it for balance. (A counter or table top can also be used, as long as there is something for stability to hold on to.) Next, everyone should stand with their feet shoulder width apart, and slowly raise up onto their toes as far as they can. Hold this position for five seconds, and then slowly release. Repeat this as many times as everyone can. 

Wall Push-Ups

The last strength training exercise that is perfect for seniors is the wall push-up. This is basically a much more accessible version of a floor push-up. All that is needed for this exercise is a nice, empty wall. Have everyone stand about arm’s length away from the wall, so that they can place their hands flat against the wall while still keeping their arms straight and feet flat on the floor. Next, have everyone slowly lean into the wall as far as they can while bending their elbows and keeping their feet in place. Hold for five seconds if possible, and then slowly have them push themselves back to their original position. Repeat this as many times as everyone can.

A New Way to Help Those with Alzheimer’s Recall Memories

An interesting study out of the University of Toronto, and reported by The Medical News Today, introduces a smartphone app for people with memory impairments that may help reinforce their memories of life events. Researchers explain the HippoCamera app imitates the function of the hippocampus by consolidating a person’s memories. The hippocampus is believed to repeatedly replay memories to the rest of the brain at a high speed to help stabilize them for long-term recall. 

Researchers explain the app works by recording everyday events in the person’s life and repeatedly playing them back to the person. They say the broader point of helping those with Alzheimer’s remember the events the HippoCamera recorded may be that remembering those things might result in a renewed ability to recall and share experiences. The lead study author, Dr. Chris Martin, says, “If you can better recall a specific moment from your recent past, you will have a stronger mental bridge between your present and past self.”

The study found people who used the app for two weeks experienced a 56% increase in their ability to recall the details of events recorded with the HippoCamera. People who used it for 70 consecutive days saw an 84% increase. Prof. Morgan D. Barense, senior investigator of the study and a cognitive neuropsychologist, says people also reported back the emotions they felt at the time and the people who were there. She adds their findings could encourage people to get into the habit of focusing on their memories and realizing there are simple things we can do to preserve memories.

Thinking About Buying a Hearing Aid Over-the-Counter?

Did you know the FDA recently made changes to regulations regarding hearing aids, which now makes it possible to buy an FDA approved device over-the-counter? While many of us have heard about the huge cost of buying a hearing aid and that Medicare typically does not cover one, you may want to know whether the experts think it is a good idea. 

The Harvard Medical School went to Dr. James Naples, assistant professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, to see if it is a viable option and to explain potential pros and cons. He explains despite there being several types of hearing aids, they all amplify sound and use a combination of signaling processing and directional microphones to filter out background noise. However he warns against confusing personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) with hearing aids as they only amplify sound. 

To determine your level of hearing loss, experts recommend starting by getting a hearing test from an audiologist like you would get an exam from an optometrist when buying eyeglasses. This is especially necessary for a severe hearing loss. For a mild to moderate hearing loss, you will probably be okay getting an OTC device without a hearing test by an audiologist. 

The next question routinely asked is if you will save money by purchasing an OTC hearing aid and the answer is most-likely yes as right now the average hearing aid runs anywhere between $2,000 to $4,000 per ear, and age-related hearing loss may be in one or both ears. OTC also helps reduce the price by eliminating the added expense of the hearing test along with the actual device being substantially lower. Doctors say the new regulations should increase competition and some early estimates are prices could drop by as much as $1,600. 

Dr. Naples cautions that just as drugstore readers are a great option for many, some individuals have more complicated issues that require more precise solutions. Hearing aids are the same. The doctor states the safest bet is to get a hearing test first.

Strategies to Deal with Sleep Problems for Individuals with Alzheimer’s

While we know many people with Alzheimer’s experience sleep problems, experts are not sure why. They only know the changes in the person’s brain somehow seem to affect sleep patterns. Studies suggest the most severe changes happen in the later stages of the disease but some people can develop problems early-on.

Types of changes include waking up at night more often and staying awake for longer periods. Brain wave studies show a decrease in both dreaming and non-dreaming sleep stages in Alzheimer’s patients. The person may feel restless and unable to lie still, resulting in behaviors like wandering or yelling and calling out. 

In the later stages of Alzheimer’s, many “individuals spend about 40 percent of their time in bed at night awake and a significant part of their daytime sleeping.” In some cases, a person may reverse their sleep pattern completely by sleeping during the day and being unable to sleep at night.  

The condition known as “sundowning” can cause a person to begin to feel agitated as dusk approaches and can go on throughout the night. Symptoms include an increase in confusion, anxiety, pacing and disorientation. Other problems triggering sleep disruptions may be from depression, restless leg syndrome, and sleep apnea. Most medical professionals including the NIH agree non-drug treatments are the safest solution as sleep medications can result in falls and other risk factors such as faster cognitive decline and outweigh their benefits.  

Measures to encourage a good night sleep include keeping routine hours for meals and bedtimes. Use the bed only as a place to sleep, and try to expose the person to morning sunlight. Daily exercise should help the person feel tired at night but do it at least four hours before bed as well as avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Ensure the person is warm or cool enough and provide security items and nightlights.
