4 Activities to Help Seniors Fight the Winter Blues

December 18, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

As the colder months arrive, it’s time to start planning wintertime activities for those in senior living in Denver. Shorter and darker days can make seniors vulnerable to (seasonal) depression, but with these stimulating indoor activities, older adults can stay happy and healthy throughout the wintertime.

From brain games to social activities, there are plenty of winter activity options in senior living in Denver. Here are the best ideas to give a try once it gets cold outside:

1. Throw a Classic Dance Party

Music is one of the best ways to keep seniors’ brains stimulated, active, and engaged. Even when memory problems start to affect seniors, music can trigger feelings of nostalgia and bring positive memories back to the surface, which is precisely what you want to help them combat the winter blues.

Put on some classic tunes and encourage them to get up and groove (in safe ways, of course). Fun movement and nostalgic music paired together are sure to chase away any negative emotions in seniors during the winter months.

2. Host a Puzzle Party

Puzzles are fun for all ages, and studies have shown that completing puzzles and similar “brain games” work at keeping senior cognition sharp. They encourage problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well as stimulate geospatial activity in the brain.

You can make a puzzle party fun and enticing for everyone, even those struggling with memory problems, and include festive and winter-themed puzzles to lift everyone’s spirits.

3. Turn On Festive Holiday Movies

Almost everyone has a favorite holiday film that they turn on each winter, so gather everyone together for a fun and festive indoor movie night! You can even set up a makeshift concession stand to make the occasion a bit more eventful and fun — just make sure that you serve snacks and drinks that are accessible and safe for everyone in the room.

4. Spa Days Full of Pampering

Anyone senior living in Denver deserves to enjoy a thorough pampering session during these winter days. Bring your own spa materials to the community and offer luxurious services that they wouldn’t otherwise normally access. These can include things like manicures, pedicures, facials, and simple grooming tasks. For seniors with memory problems, focus on low-stimulation tasks like hair brushing and nail clipping. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make residents feel special. Seniors are bound to feel more like themselves when they look their best!

Best Ways to Combat Winter Depression in Seniors

The holiday season should be joyful and light, but that isn’t always the reality for many seniors. Thankfully, you can use the above guide to create a memorable and fun winter for residents of senior living in Denver!

Retirement Planning: How to Choose the Best Senior Living Community for You

March 27, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Retirement communities offer unique opportunities for older adults to explore their lives after retirement. However, there are so many options, so how do you know which to choose?
Here’s how to pick the best senior living community for you.

Choose Your Location

This might seem obvious, but not everyone wants to live in a senior living community near their current residence. So if you want to explore a new place or move to another city, go for it!

Just make sure you know the basics about where you will be moving. For example, you’ll want to know about the local weather, convenience stores, and medical centers. You don’t want to move and put yourself in a position where you can’t fulfill your basic needs.

If you’re still unsure of where you want to go, take some time to research different areas. Many places around the U.S. are known for their retirement communities and senior-friendly atmospheres.

Tour Each Community in Person

If you can visit each prospective retirement community in person, you should always take the opportunity. You will learn more about the community in person than you could online.

However, if you struggle with transportation or mobility issues, you can still get a similar experience by taking a virtual tour. Many retirement communities are dedicated to being accessible, so don’t hesitate to ask about virtual options.

While visiting, ask the staff about daily life in their community. Make a note of any important information, like dining options, social opportunities, and housekeeping services.

Look at Resident Reviews

You can get the best idea of what life is like in a community by studying reviews left by its residents. It’s important to see both the good and bad things that people say about a retirement community, so look through as many reviews as possible.

If there are any consistent glaring red flags, like safety hazards, resident mistreatment, or poor maintenance, you should eliminate that community from your search. No place is perfect, but high-quality retirement communities will make every effort to correct problems promptly. Check for the community’s responses to negative reviews to see how they handle issues.

Make a List of Non-Negotiable Amenities

Senior living communities come with lots of enjoyable amenities, but they only matter if you will benefit from them. Therefore, you should come up with a list of the most important benefits and amenities that you are looking for in a retirement community. Some examples of popular amenities include swimming pools and flexible dining options.

Categorize this list by putting non-negotiables at the top. What are the amenities you can’t live without? Which ones could you miss out on while still being satisfied? This will help you filter your options and discard the ones that don’t fulfill enough of your preferences.

Find the Best Retirement Community Possible
Use this guide to help you as you search for the best senior living community for you. You never have to settle; there is a place for everyone!

Tips to Recall and Improve Memories

February 06, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Many of us occasionally forget where we put our keys; forget an appointment or the name of a new acquaintance. Experts say this is common and usually not serious but just a sign the person is too preoccupied and busy. However consistent memory problems that start to interfere with a person’s day-to-day life may be a sign of a bigger problem.

Memory loss can be caused by a number of things such as genetics, age, and medical conditions affecting the brain. If you are experiencing more than your share of memory problems, experts say there are a number of things you can do. These include lifestyle changes like improving diet, exercising and avoiding smoking as well as talking to your doctor regarding current health conditions and medications you are taking.

Experts say we can also train our brain to think better much as we do with exercise to improve muscle strength. Mental workouts can expand and challenge our brains, which may improve memory. A large trial from the journal PLoS One, reports study participants who did just 15 minutes of brain training activities for at least five days a week showed improvement in brain functions. Their activities focused on quick recall and the ability to memorize patterns.

Other activities related to improving brain health include exercising, meditating, getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet. Several studies show drinking coffee or green teas with caffeine can improve memory as does eating dark chocolate. However researchers advise against eating foods high in sugar or calorie content as it may lead to high levels of inflammation in parts of the brain, and affect memory.

MorningStar at San Tomas specializes in caring for seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Our holistic approach to senior living includes purposeful activities to stimulate or calm whatever the extent of memory loss may be. Our new senior living community is located in West San Jose in Santa Clara County and is now leasing suites as we open to residents this spring. Please visit our website today to inquire about availability, pricing and ask about early depositor incentives.

Walking Helps Improve Balance

January 25, 2023 by MorningStar Living in memory care

Many seniors are aware of the fact that a fall could threaten their independence and way of life. Common injuries include to the head, hip fractures, and in the most extreme cases death. Experts explain balance declines as we age as well as can be affected by medications and medical conditions, lack of flexibility and uncorrected vision problems. This is why medical experts encourage seniors to work on maintaining and improving balance.

The Harvard Medical School says one of the simplest ways to improve balance is with exercises like walking, strength training and workouts targeted to improve stability. However before beginning any new exercise regime, consult your healthcare provider.

Whether you are fairly active or living a sedentary lifestyle, experts say to remember minutes are more important than miles. If you are unused to exercise, start at the beginning. Also wear a good walking shoe, and if you use a cane or walker, use it. Again experts say it is safer to walk with a buddy and to bring along a cell phone. Walk in a place with an even surface, and especially in the beginning, stay close to home.  Once you start feeling more confident, add more minutes to your routine.

For seniors who are already walking, try adding a few more minutes to your routine or a more challenging route. Experts say the overall goal should be to do at least 150 minutes a week. To add strength training exercises and workouts to improve balance, ask your doctor for advice on how to get started.

We also heard from a neighborhood gentleman who wrote, “I just discovered this building driving by. Wow it looks stunning and what a location so close to DU! What is Sleep Apnea?

October 12, 2022 by MorningStar Living in memory care

The US News & World Report says approximately 1 in 3 adults are believed to have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). They explain the condition causes a person to momentarily stop breathing at intervals throughout the night and interrupting their sleep.

Pulmonologist and section head of sleep medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver, Dr. Sheila Tsai, explains, “A person’s airway either partially collapses or completely closes (obstructs) during sleep.” She says episodes can be frequent throughout the sleep cycle and cause drops in oxygenation. While the person may only awake briefly as they struggle to breathe, their sleep is fragmented and non-restorative as it infers with REM, the deep, restful stage of sleep.

Common causes of OSA are obesity and age, and The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine estimates as many as 80 percent of people suffering from OSA are undiagnosed. The condition typically causes the person to snore loudly, interrupted with gasps, hesitations and snorts. They may wake up feeling unrefreshed and sleepy during the day, or complain of headaches. OSA can additionally cause other sleep disorders to become worse like restless-leg syndrome and sleep walking.

Doctors say OSA is a serious, but treatable condition and it is important to seek medical care. A sleep study or test done in a clinic setting or even at home is the best way to diagnose the condition. Untreated OSA can put a person at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other problems.

Please allow us to introduce the new MorningStar at Observatory Park, which will open to residents this winter. The fashionable, 5-story building is in the historic DU area and home to old trees, pretty gardens, local eateries, and a few blocks from Observatory Park. Our senior living community offers 60 assisted living suites in a variety of configurations and floorplans. For those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood’s holistic approach to memory care preserves residents’ dignity and self-worth. Downsizing Can Be the Start of a New Adventure

June 23, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Instead of feeling sad about moving from a home that perhaps is too large or costly for you to care for, think about moving into a smaller apartment or condo as the start of a new adventure.   However, to do it right, you should be organized.  Experts suggest you only take with you the things that bring joy and find ways to get rid of the rest.  If that piece of advice still finds you with way too much stuff, then take a moment to picture how you want your new life to look.  Is it a sleek, minimalist décor or more like a smaller, compact version of your present home?

Some simple solutions to help you decorate your new apartment include bringing with you or buying multi-purpose furniture.  This could include upholstered storage benches or cubes, nesting coffee tables, extension desks, and sized-down sofa and chairs more suited to a compact footprint.  Attractive baskets and storage carts also help to make a small place feel more organized.

If you want to use some of your current furniture, measure it, and then draw up a floor plan of the new place and lay it all out to see how it will fit.  In addition, since your new place is smaller, it will most likely not have as many closets as your old home so go through your clothing and only take the items you truly enjoy wearing.  Give the rest to charity.  Lastly, consider the amenities at your new place.  For example if they have an onsite fitness room, you probably do not need to bring along your own in-home treadmill or stationary bike.

At MorningStar at Silver Lake, our beautiful senior living community offers stylish suites that are ready to move into and just require your furnishings and personal items.  Apartments come in a range of configurations including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans.  Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, billiards & game room, fitness center, gardens, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  For independent living or assisted living Everett seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, the perfect community to comfortably and safely age in place.

MorningStar at Silver Lake proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. During an Emergency Department Visit, Communication is Vital

May 09, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

In a recent Harvard Health Publishing article, an E.R. a physician affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Adaira I. Landry, MD, MEd, provides some tips to navigate a trip to the E.R. in order to expedite the best care. She states the first goal of the ER team is to get a person “registered for the visit, assess how urgently they need a clinician, and determine which treatment and diagnostic tests are needed.” The team relies on the information they gather, which is interpreted and used to develop a course of treatment.

As the E.R. staff changes throughout the day, a series of care providers will ask you to repeat much of your story about what brings you to the hospital. During the interview, it is important to provide clear, accurate and comprehensive information and communicate back and forth with the doctor.

In the event you are incapable of providing pertinent details and questions about current medications and underlying medical issues, it is helpful to have a family member or a trusted friend along to provide the information. Landry explains in a teaching hospital like she works at, you may see a triage nurse who determines how quickly you will be seen, a nurse assigned to your care, a resident or medical student, and then the attending physician.

All of the E.R. personnel work as a team to determine your course of treatment. Having you repeat your history as various team members ask many of the same questions and repeat exams; it can uncover any missing pieces in constructing a final diagnosis.

South Denver’s newest senior living community is MorningStar at Observatory Park. Located a few blocks from the iconic Observatory Park, our contemporary 5-story building has 60 assisted living suites in a variety of configurations and floorplans. For those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our Reflections Neighborhood provides the safety, security, people and programs to help preserve the individual’s dignity and self-worth. Statistics on Who Lives in Assisted Living

May 06, 2022 by MorningStar Living in memory care

Curious about who lives in assisted living and what area has the most communities? Organizations like the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) and the American Health Care Association (AHCA) provide in-depth answers with overviews of studies conducted by associations and agencies who research and survey senior housing in America.

Currently, statistics show the US has approximately 28,900 assisted living communities and nearly 1 million licensed beds. Regionally the West has the most assisted living communities with 40.8 percent. The South has 28 percent of all A.L. communities, the Midwest 22.6 percent and the Northeast only 8.6 percent.

Services common to most assisted living communities include:

  • 24-hour personal care services for the activities of daily living (ADLs)

  • exercise, health and wellness programs

  • housekeeping and maintenance

  • meals and dining services

  • medication management or assistance

  • transportation

Fewer A.L. communities cater to seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss. Recent statistics report only 14.3 percent of communities have a dementia care unit, wing or designated floor; and a smaller percent (8.7) of communities strictly serve adults with dementia.

Assisted living communities are home to 800,000 older adults and the most common service required is help with bathing (64 percent). Other services required include help with walking (57 percent), dressing (48 percent), toileting (40 percent) and bed transfer (29 percent) to eating (19 percent). More than half of the residents suffer from high blood. Other common health conditions include arthritis, heart disease, and depression.

The Denver area is home to several of MorningStar’s senior living communities. Opening in late 2022, we add another home in the desirable South Denver neighborhood and near to the Observatory Park. MorningStar at Observatory Park’s assisted living offers comprehensive care and hospitality services, luxury amenities and wellness programs and activities to enhance quality of life for our residents. We also provide trusted, holistic memory care for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Planning a Move to Senior Housing?

March 26, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Independent Living

If you are moving from your own home into an independent or senior living community, most likely you will want to downsize. While it can sound overwhelming to go through a whole household of stuff and whittle it down to fit into a modest sized apartment, a few tips will help.

Without question it is a lot of work and can be stressful and emotional but the Internet offers lots of useful information from organizing experts. Most say the trick is to prepare in advance by making a plan and allowing plenty of time. Remember, if you are interested, there are companies who offer these services and will do everything from helping with the downsizing process to packing up, and moving your things to your new home.

Now you are ready for the sorting out process deciding what you will bring and what to give to family, donate, or throw away. This is the hardest task as your house is full of memories but again here is where a system works. Experts say sort by rooms and simplify the task by making a “yes” pile and a “no” pile. They warn not to make a “maybe” pile as it can end up growing in size and complicate your plan. Again, remember the goal is to simplify your life and not overcrowd the new place with useless stuff.

Things to consider are the size of your new place and its layout (get measurements). You will want furniture scaled to fit as well as room for hobbies or musical instruments that are important to you. Also consider the amenities your new place offers such as a dining service. If most of your meals will be prepared by your new community, you will just need the basics in your kitchen. If the new place has a fitness center, there is no need to bring your own equipment.

Interested in Retirement Community Living but Feel it May be Too Expensive?

January 21, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

While a retirement community may sound appealing, many seniors worry the cost is too high. The truth is, there is a wide range in the cost of independent living communities based on things like geographic location, services and amenities that all impact your monthly fee.

Luxury communities in metropolitan areas tend to be priced higher as do those in more desirable neighborhoods. Also the apartment’s square footage, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, location within the community such as sought-after views or end-units, balconies or private patios can all up the price. Opting in for things such as a meal plan or moving into independent living but requiring a range of day-to-day services offered in their assisted living units typically increases the price.

Experts say it is important to consider the value of the services and amenities you receive. In your own home, you may have paid for things like lawn care and landscaping services as well as encountered unexpected home repairs and maintenance upkeep. If you need the type of services offered in assisted living, consider what a home health aide costs; and could you afford to pay for services 24/7 as you will find in many senior living communities?

The social aspect of community living is something many seniors say they were surprised by the amount of value it offers. At MorningStar at Silver Lake, we make it easier to connect formally as well as informally with restaurant-style dining, bistro, life enrichment room, billiards and game room, fitness center, strolling paths, outdoor gardening areas and a complement of wellness programs.

MorningStar at Silver Lake embodies luxury senior housing in Everett, WA. Many of Today’s Seniors Love the Idea of an Active Community Life

January 19, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Unlike years ago, when elderly people wanted to live in their own homes for as long as possible, many of today’s seniors see a real advantage to senior housing and love the idea of a more active community life. In fact, studies indicate community living provides a higher quality of life for many seniors and may contribute to a longer life and better physical and emotional health than those who remain in their own homes.

Experts say this may be due to the fact senior living offers a less stressful, carefree environment in which seniors no longer have the responsibilities and unexpected expenses of home repairs and maintenance. Furthermore, a retirement community is built around the needs of its residents as it is designed to be safely navigable for older folks as well as offers the benefit of others being around in case the need arises such as in the event of a fall.

Another reason a senior living community such as MorningStar at Silver Lake enhances quality of life for residents is the five-star dining experience for better nutritional health. Additionally, wellness programs, social activities and special events mean there is something to look forward to each day. Whether taking an exercise class, playing a challenging game of trivia, or relaxing with friends on the patio you will be engaged, stimulated and have a sense of purpose.

MorningStar at Silver Lake strives to be the best independent and assisted living Everett offers, and we take the well-being of our residents very seriously. Our stylish suites have floor plans that range from studio to one- or two-bedroom configurations. Each apartment has a full kitchen with premium finishes, a walk-in closet and most have a washer/dryer. For your safety and peace of mind, all suites have a handicap-accessible bathroom and emergency call system.

Our all-inclusive community offers all of the amenities, services and enrichment programs to give you the best retirement years possible.  In addition, we are located in the beautiful Puget Sound region surrounded by water, forests, and mountains, minutes from the world-renowned Providence Regional Medical Center, and close to shopping and other services.  Please see our website for more information.

We proudly provide the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting.  If you are looking for exceptional independent or assisted living, Everett, WA’s MorningStar at Silver Lake may be your answer.
