Tips for Safely taking Prescription Drugs

August 01, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Every year seniors are hospitalized due to prescribed medications. Statistics show drug-related problems are common in older adults and include drug ineffectiveness, adverse drug effects, over-dosage, under-dosage, inappropriate treatment, inadequate monitoring, nonadherence, and drug interactions. It is important to remember even though medication is prescribed by your healthcare provider, problems can occur.

Experts say you must follow directions and take medications as prescribed including on time, in the right dosage, with or without food, and never grinding it into a powder (unless directed by the doctor). They recommend carrying an updated list of all medications and sharing it with your doctors. Additionally, be aware of common interactions between prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications and alcoholic drinks.

Before your doctor prescribes a new medication, ask them why you are taking it, for how long and what are the potential side effects. It is important to know what to look for and to discuss the benefits versus any negative or dangerous consequences. You will want to know things like will a drug make you drowsy so you know not to drive under its influence.

Another thing to safeguard your health is to review your medications with your doctor on a regular basis asking questions such as: do you still need to take it, is the dosage correct, and is there a non-drug alternative? Despite your faith in your medical team, it is not a bad idea to check your medications against the American Geriatric Society’s “2019 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.” The online site lists medications that may be inappropriate or dangerous for seniors.

Gardening can be a Healthy, Enjoyable Hobby for Seniors

June 20, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Memory Care Facility

Research shows gardening may provide seniors both mental and physical benefits. In addition to enjoying a garden filled with beautiful flowers or homegrown vegetables and herbs, gardening can be an inspirational “mind-body-spirit” experience.

Experts say before a senior picks up a shovel, it is a good idea to prepare in advance and take a few precautions. Gardening can put a lot of stress on the spine so it is recommended you warm up your body with a few, full body stretches before you start; during your garden session and after you are done. Use garden tools that are sharp and ergonomically-designed to cause less stress to the hands and back. Terraced or raised beds limit the amount of bending and stress on the back. Use a bench or knee pads as much as possible. Take precautions when lifting and limit your load. Use a light-weight wheelbarrow and keep your gardening sessions short.

Remember to stay hydrated and avoid the full heat of the day. Wear sunblock, protective clothing and a hat with a wide brim. Working in the dirt is therapeutic, and studies show the bacteria in dirt are actually good for us as they boost our immune systems.

Several studies report gardening can provide some protection against dementia as well as slow the progression of dementia; and has the added benefit of being easy to do even when other activities become difficult. Feeling the dirt between your fingers as you tend to your flowers and vegetables is mentally uplifting, and it is highly satisfying to behold the results. There is even a social component when gardening in a community garden or being in your front yard and exchanging pleasantries and gardening tips as neighbors pass by.

If a loved one has Alzheimer’s or another form of memory impairment, we encourage you to take a look at West San Jose’s newest memory care facility, MorningStar at West Valley. Through Lavender Sky, MorningStar’s holistic approach to Memory Care, we incorporate Montessori-based therapies and create personalized service plans to address the needs of our dementia care residents.  We are scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2022 and can help you reserve a select suite for your loved one now. Ask about our “Founders Club Specials.”

Social Media Offers Benefits for Seniors

June 17, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Memory Care Facility

Statistics estimate approximately 59 percent of seniors 65 years and older use social media and 46 percent are on at least one social media platform. While many say they prefer face-to-face contact, social media can offer physical and mental benefits to older adults.

Today’s seniors use Facebook and Zoom to stay up-to-date on grandkids’ activities, accomplishments and sporting events; to view the family’s recent vacation photos, and to find and reconnect with long-lost friends and relatives. Regardless of time zones or conflicting schedules, a senior can send a text or post on their Facebook page at their convenience and have it viewed and acknowledged at others’ convenience.

Moreover social media makes it easy for seniors to learn about a wide range of topics such as scientific breakthroughs as well as local and world events. It is an effective platform for small start-ups to sell products like handmade crafts, promote consulting services or events and freelance. Networking, taking courses online, and reading posts and articles on diverse topics help seniors’ minds stay active. Seniors can post stories about their perspective on past events or help mentor and provide advice to younger people. They can play games on social platforms with friends and family or meet new friends from around the world.

West San Jose’s newest memory care facility, MorningStar at West Valley is designed to care for residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. Incoming residents are thoroughly evaluated to create personalized service plans that address their special needs and provide a gentle flow of purposeful activities. Please visit our website for more about our alzheimers care and to contact us regarding any questions. We open to residents in the fourth quarter of 2022 and are happy to help you reserve a select suite for your loved one. Also ask about our Founders Club Specials.

Stay Healthy During Your Senior Years by Exercising 30 Minutes a Day

June 01, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Exercise is important for people of all ages, but it is especially important for seniors. As we age, our bodies become more susceptible to disease, and it takes a bit more effort to keep health ailments at bay.

Exercising for 30 minutes each day is a habit that every senior should adopt, whether they live at home or in an independent living community. Even moderate exercise helps with both physical and mental health and can make senior living more enjoyable.

Benefits of Exercising 30 Minutes a Day

Maintaining good physical health can be simple by adopting small habits each day. Whether you live alone or in an assisted living community, incorporating exercise into your life does not have to take up a lot of time or require a lot of investment.

Simply lifting light weights, walking, swimming, or engaging in another aerobic activity for 30 minutes can do wonders for your health.

Improve Strength

Seniors naturally lose strength in their bones and muscles over time. Without regular exercise, ligaments and joints can become weak too. Seniors who do not make time to exercise are at greater risk of injury, even from regular daily activities.

Exercising for 30 minutes a day prevents the body from weakening and is the best line of defense against preventable injuries.

Maintain Balance

Falls are one of the top reasons for senior hospitalization. More often than not, falls are not caused by tripping over objects but by a lack of balance. Seniors who do not exercise may find themselves more wobbly and more prone to falls when walking or standing.

Exercise not only strengthens muscles, which helps with balance, but it improves reaction time and flexibility, making a fall less likely to occur.

Boosts Mood

One of the greatest benefits of exercising for 30 minutes a day is the impact it has on mood and mental health. Exercising has been proven to release endorphins, which contribute to improved mood, greater motivation, and a decreased risk of developing depression. Health is a holistic effort, and exercise benefits your mind just as much as your body.

Improve Energy Levels

If you’ve ever felt a lack of motivation or energy needed to get through your day, it could be due to a lack of exercise.

Daily exercise certainly expends energy, so it can seem counterintuitive that it would boost your energy levels. However, seniors who exercise for 30 minutes a day generally experience high energy levels and greater motivation.

Maintain an Active Lifestyle with MorningStar Senior Living

MorningStar takes pride in the reputation we have been nurturing since 2003. We aim to provide the best of what independent and assisted living has to offer.

Why We Need Potassium

May 30, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Memory Care Facility

While many of us know bananas contain potassium, we may not know much more about it or why we need it. Potassium is “a soft, silvery-white mineral found naturally in the earth, and it's critically important to the function of certain processes in the human body.” It also functions as an electrolyte, and is critical to the conduction of electrical signals throughout the body.

Along with chloride and salt, potassium is an essential, integral part of every cell, making cell growth and nerve signaling possible. It helps generate muscle contractions; regulate the heartbeat; build proteins from amino acids and metabolize carbohydrates for energy.

Given the importance of potassium, luckily it is water soluble, easily absorbed and found in many foods. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements says adults aged 19 and older should consume 4,700 milligrams of potassium daily. For context, a medium-sized banana contains about 400 mgs of potassium. A whole avocado contains 975 mg and a large white potato has 1,500 mg.  Some other foods containing potassium are leafy greens, peas, pumpkins, oranges, grapefruits, kiwis and melons. Seafood, meats, dairy, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and nuts are other healthy choices.

Not getting enough potassium can cause a condition known as hypokalemia. Common symptoms include muscle weakness, twitching or cramping (especially at night), or an abnormal or irregular heart rate. Too much potassium can cause hyperkalemia, resulting in weakness and fatigue; numbness and tingling in the limbs and extremities, nausea and chest pain. Potassium-sparing blood pressure medications can elevate your risk of hyperkalemia.

If a loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, please take a look at West San Jose’s newest memory care facility, MorningStar Memory Care at West Valley. Visit our website to learn more about our community, and to contact our team with questions. We are scheduled to open in the last quarter of 2022 and can help you reserve a select suite for your loved one that needs alzheimers care. Also ask about our “Founders Club Specials.”

Build Your Immune System with a Healthy Lifestyle

April 29, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Growing older can open the door to chronic diseases, impaired mobility and other distressing health concerns. While there are many challenges we encounter on our path to old age, medical experts say there are some things we can do to improve and protect our overall well being. Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, explains, “It’s important to recognize the things that are most supportive of a good immune system are a healthy lifestyle.”

This starts with the basics like making sure we get enough sleep each night, following a healthy diet, and staying physically active. Other things we can do to improve the immune system is to support our gut microbiome by eating plant-based foods and whole grains to naturally get probiotics. The best sources of probiotics are from fermented foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, kombucha and kimchi.

Experts say drinking responsibly is okay but evidence of excessive alcohol in both human and animal research indicates “overconsumption of alcohol decreases immune reactivity, reducing the body’s ability to fight infection.” The 2015-20 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends women consume no more than one drink a day and men no more than two.

Additional ways to protect and strengthen our immune system is to keep up-to-date with vaccines as well as follow the medical community’s recommended exercise guidelines. Quit smoking, get seven to eight hours of sleep a night and try to reduce stress are other ways we can strengthen our immune response. So is eating foods high in antioxidants such as artichokes, beans, blackberries, strawberries, dark chocolate, red cabbage and spinach.

MorningStar at Silver Lake’s Assisted Living

March 24, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

As a vibrant 55+ community, MorningStar at Silver Lake has stylish apartments offering seniors a choice of independent living or assisted living. Our independent living is designed for active seniors who love the idea of someone else handling the maintenance and housekeeping giving them more time to socialize, travel and pursue their hobbies and interests.

Assisted living is for seniors who require help with the activities of daily living (ADLs) to improve their quality of life. As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

Many residents report being surprised by how full their lives are after a move into an assisted living community. Moreover, rather than lose their independence as many fear such a move would do, most are pleased to discover once they get the daily care they need, they are more ready than ever to lead productive lives.

Community life solves the problem of loneliness as well as problems with meal prep many elderly adults experience, often resorting to frozen meals or fast food. MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. No longer driving? No worries as we offer scheduled transportation to area shopping as well as trips to the doctors and running errands.

We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Moreover, if we do not have a program or activities that attract your interest or offer a hobby you would love to explore, we encourage you to start a club.

Situated in the Puget Sound region surrounded by water, forests, and mountains, we are 25 miles north of Seattle, minutes from the world-renowned Providence Regional Medical Center, and close to shopping, restaurants and other services. Please contact us to learn more about the finest independent and assisted living in Everett and be sure to ask us about our Move-in Specials.

Researchers See a Future of Hip and Knee Repair Without Surgery

February 23, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Researchers say a future of hip or knee “replacements” done without surgery may be on the horizon. By employing a combination of drugs and stem-cell therapies, it may be possible to “repair cartilage before osteoarthritis sets in or an operation is needed.”

Osteoarthritis, commonly afflicting the elderly, is a degenerative disease attributed to "wear and tear" but can also be caused by earlier sports injuries, obesity and other trauma to the cartilage around the knee, hip or shoulder joints. Experts explain the loss of cartilage, which does not have its own blood supply or nerves, limits its ability to mend itself and is the major cause of joint pain and arthritis affecting over 32.5 million people in the U.S. In 2017 alone, there were 754,000 knee replacements done and 448,000 hip replacements.

Michael Longaker, a professor of surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and co-director of its Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, explains the goal of his research is to not wait for osteoarthritis to develop, but to halt the degenerative process so people never need to have a joint replaced. His team’s focus is on programming stem cells to become cartilage cells. Other researchers are working to develop drugs that stop the progression of “wear and tear” on joints. Researchers are also looking at methods to “effectively deliver new cells and compounds” as well as designing materials to help new cells integrate with existing tissue. Scientists admit they still have a ways to go before they will have alternative therapies in place but remain optimistic.

Engaging in Hobbies is Good for Seniors

February 02, 2022 by MorningStar Living in memory care

For many, retirement means an end to a long career and a typically busy lifestyle. As relaxing as that sound, research shows it is important for people to continue to feel actively engaged regardless of their age. One interesting and fun way to do it is with a hobby as they are a good way to keep our brains sharp, relieve stress and anxiety, and lessen obsessive thoughts and preoccupations.

One example of an all-around hobby is gardening. Not only does the person benefit from their labor in the form of flowers, fruits or vegetables, experts say gardening offers physical and mental benefits. These include reducing stress, giving the person a sense of achievement, getting out into fresh air and staying fit. If you are worrying about the physical work involved in gardening, there are tools and methods designed to make it easier. Raised beds eliminate the need for bending and kneeling on the ground as does vertical gardening that keeps things at arms’ reach.

Another hobby beneficial for seniors is playing a musical instrument. For instance, when playing the piano, the hands and brain have to coordinate. The bilateral (two-sided) movements fire neurons all over the brain and stimulate a whole range of brain functions that provide numerous benefits. If you aren’t musical, consider knitting as it offers the same two-sided movements along with the satisfaction of creating a baby blanket for a little one or a pair of socks for a homeless shelter.

Working on jigsaw puzzles, coloring, birdwatching and photography are all calming, brain stimulating, fun activities. Experts say many hobbies do not require a commitment, and if at first you don’t find something to keep your interest, give another one a try.

MorningStar of North Ridge is devoted entirely to the comprehensive care of those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. As part of the well-respected MorningStar Senior Living Company founded on the principle “to honor, to serve, to invest,” we have created a true home within a serene residential setting. We attribute our success and growth to God’s grace and to staying true to a mission of servant-leadership, setting us apart from other senior living communities. Our holistic approach to memory care includes meaningful activities and programs; visit our website to learn more.

Falls are a Common Cause of Serious Injury Especially in those with Alzheimer’s

January 28, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Dementia Care

The WebMD website warns falls are a leading cause of disability, premature nursing home placement, and death among older adults. They also say individuals suffering from Alzheimer's disease experience more than double the rate of falls as people without the disorder. Experts say this is mostly likely due to problems with balance and gait disorders as well as visual and spatial perception. One study done a few years ago in France reports falls may even be an early sign of Alzheimer’s.

The study consisted of a group of older adults who appeared physically and cognitively healthy. Researchers were surprised to discover two-thirds of those with large deposits of Alzheimer's-associated plaque in their brains suffered falls, while only one-third of those with little or no plaque experienced falls. Susan Stark, PhD, of Washington University in St. Louis says this was the first study to clearly “identify a risk of increased falls related to a diagnosis of preclinical Alzheimer’s disease.” Preclinical Alzheimer’s disease is the term used to describe people with large deposits of Alzheimer's-associated plaque in their brains, despite appearing cognitively normal.

Falls are not a normal part of aging and there are things you can do to help keep you on your feet and mitigate the risk. These include exercising, getting routine eye exams, and talking to your doctors about medication side effects, surgical procedures and other things that can increase your risk for a fall.

MorningStar of North Ridge specializes in providing individualized care for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our community has 38 suites with studio and one-bedroom floor plans and is equipped to care for residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. We encourage you to get the best Alzheimer’s care for your loved one by visiting our website to learn more about our compassionate home, our experienced team and our company’s philosophy.

January 24, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

At first glance, you may not think that makes much difference but MorningStar was started in 2003 based on a unique mission statement, principles and philosophy.  As Ken Jaeger, founder/CEO of MorningStar explains, his intention was to create senior living that was “defined by the human touch. I wanted to recreate my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”

Out of this vision, came a mission statement that still guides the way we deliver service to our residents:  Honor God in our business practices and relationships; Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals; and Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well.”  Even the name “MorningStar” was inspired by Mr. Jaeger’s contemplation of the bible and his commitment to relieve poverty around the world.

Many of Today’s Seniors Love the Idea of an Active Community Life

January 19, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Unlike years ago, when elderly people wanted to live in their own homes for as long as possible, many of today’s seniors see a real advantage to senior housing and love the idea of a more active community life. In fact, studies indicate community living provides a higher quality of life for many seniors and may contribute to a longer life and better physical and emotional health than those who remain in their own homes.

Experts say this may be due to the fact senior living offers a less stressful, carefree environment in which seniors no longer have the responsibilities and unexpected expenses of home repairs and maintenance. Furthermore, a retirement community is built around the needs of its residents as it is designed to be safely navigable for older folks as well as offers the benefit of others being around in case the need arises such as in the event of a fall.

Another reason a senior living community such as MorningStar at Silver Lake enhances quality of life for residents is the five-star dining experience for better nutritional health. Additionally, wellness programs, social activities and special events mean there is something to look forward to each day. Whether taking an exercise class, playing a challenging game of trivia, or relaxing with friends on the patio you will be engaged, stimulated and have a sense of purpose.

MorningStar at Silver Lake strives to be the best independent and assisted living Everett offers, and we take the well-being of our residents very seriously. Our stylish suites have floor plans that range from studio to one- or two-bedroom configurations. Each apartment has a full kitchen with premium finishes, a walk-in closet and most have a washer/dryer. For your safety and peace of mind, all suites have a handicap-accessible bathroom and emergency call system.

Our all-inclusive community offers all of the amenities, services and enrichment programs to give you the best retirement years possible.  In addition, we are located in the beautiful Puget Sound region surrounded by water, forests, and mountains, minutes from the world-renowned Providence Regional Medical Center, and close to shopping and other services.  Please see our website for more information.

We proudly provide the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting.  If you are looking for exceptional independent or assisted living, Everett, WA’s MorningStar at Silver Lake may be your answer.
