How you prepare for a physical activity such as yoga, cycling, and pickleball is just as important as participating in the physical activity itself. Warm-up exercises for seniors make a huge difference between getting hurt and remaining injury-free. Getting involved with warm-up exercises not only elevates body temperature, but also prepares the heart, bones, joints, and muscles for an increase in physical exertion.

Calisthenics

Getting the heart to pump faster helps the other areas of the body, as well as increases your stamina for more physically demanding activities. Calisthenics represents the best warm-up exercise for achieving higher heart pumping capacity. The classic stance for calisthenics involves spreading your legs at a standing position, keeping the legs semi-loose, and raising both arms to touch the hands over your head. Then start moving both the arms and legs in sync, while eventually increasing the movement speed of both limbs.

Arm Swings

Arm swings also help encourage a faster, stronger pumping of the heart, with one additional health benefit. This warm-up exercise for seniors also loosens the muscles and tendons located in both arms, which enhances your flexibility. Assume a standing position and then spread the legs a couple of feet apart. Turn your torso to the left and make sure the arms stay loose. High Knees

Now, the time has arrived to warm up the knees. High-knee warm-up exercises vary in both length and intensity, but the most effective high-knee exercise for seniors involves holding both arms out at waist length and beginning to march slowly while raising each knee to the palms of your hands. You should slowly raise the knees in short increments until they touch both palms, and then increase the speed that you raise the knees. Do between 20 and 30 knee movements, take a minute-long break, and then repeat the knee-raising movements.

Shoulder Rolls

The shoulders are the next part of the body to stretch. Start shoulder rolls by extending your arms at the sides with your feet positioned at shoulder width. Move your shoulders up and down like you shrug when having a conversation. The key is to move the shoulder blades toward each other between eight and 10 times to loosen the muscles and tendons.

Squats

The muscles in the legs need to stretch as well. And you accomplish this by performing the warm-up exercise called squats. Stand tall with the feet moved to shoulder width. Bend your knees slowly like you are about to sit on a stool. Keep the chest upright and repeat the movement between eight and 10 times. Prevent a Diabetic Coma before It Happens

A diabetes-related coma occurs when the body’s blood sugar levels become dangerously high or low causing a person to lose consciousness and require emergency medical treatment. If left untreated, the consequences can be deadly.  

Two events can lead to a diabetes-related coma. The first is when a person becomes hypoglycemic, meaning their blood sugar levels drop below 54 mg/dL. Experts say the person does not get enough blood sugar for the brain’s most basic needs and body functions start to shut down.

The other extreme is excessively high blood sugar called hyperglycemia, and defined as blood sugar levels of 300 mg/dL or higher. When this happens, the kidneys cannot function properly and begin to shut down.  

Experts say there are several causes for either hypo- or hyperglycemia induced comas. If you use insulin, you may be taking too much or too little. In addition alcohol can lower a person’s blood sugar as can suddenly increasing the amount of exercise a person does. Blood sugar dips or highs can occur from skipping meals or not eating. Certain medication such as steroids or getting sick can also change a person’s blood sugar levels. 

Common symptoms of hypoglycemia induced comas are confusion, lightheadedness and fast heart rate. The person may feel sweaty, tired and/or hungry as well as complain of a headache. Comas brought on by hyperglycemia include abdominal pain, dry mouth, urinating more and nausea and vomiting. The person may complain of feeling tired and shortness of breath. If you are diabetic, it is important to see your doctor regularly and to learn as much as you can about managing your diabetes.

Experts say this is common and usually not serious but just a sign the person is too preoccupied and busy. However consistent memory problems that start to interfere with a person’s day-to-day life may be a sign of a bigger problem. 

Memory loss can be caused by a number of things such as genetics, age, and medical conditions affecting the brain. If you are experiencing more than your share of memory problems, experts say there are a number of things you can do. These include lifestyle changes like improving diet, exercising and avoiding smoking as well as talking to your doctor regarding current health conditions and medications you are taking.  

Experts say we can also train our brain to think better much as we do with exercise to improve muscle strength. Mental workouts can expand and challenge our brains, which may improve memory. A large trial from the journal PLoS One, reports study participants who did just 15 minutes of brain training activities for at least five days a week showed improvement in brain functions. Their activities focused on quick recall and the ability to memorize patterns. 

Other activities related to improving brain health include exercising, meditating, getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet. Several studies show drinking coffee or green teas with caffeine can improve memory as does eating dark chocolate. However researchers advise against eating foods high in sugar or calorie content as it may lead to high levels of inflammation in parts of the brain, and affect memory.

Experts Vote on Best 2023 Diets

The U.S. News & World Report says statistics show that while over half of all Americans followed a diet in the past year, only 20 percent of them were able to keep the weight off for more than 12 months. Moreover according to the International Food Information Council, consumers in the U.S. spend 33 billion dollars annually on their diet plan. 

This prompted the U.S. News & World Report to once again ask a panel of leading medical doctors, registered dietary nutritionists and nutritional epidemiologists specializing in diseases like heart and diabetes as well as weight loss to rate various diets for overall effectiveness. Each diet was rated for healthiness, safety, ease of following and promoting a healthy, sustainable lifestyle to meet people’s various lifestyles and goals. Also the general consensus is fad diets just don't work and some can even be dangerous.

For the sixth year in a row, the Mediterranean Diet, which follows the eating habits of those surrounding the Mediterranean Sea including Greece and Italy, took first place with high scores for overall health and sustainable as well as weight loss. The diet is based on eating plant-based foods like fruits and vegetables along with whole grains, beans, nuts, seafood, lean poultry and unsaturated fat from extra-virgin olive oil. 

The DASH Diet (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) took second place and is promoted by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. It is intended to stop (or prevent) hypertension, also referred to as high blood pressure. It too endorses a flexible, balanced and heart-healthy eating plan.

Tying the DASH Diet for second place is one you may not be as familiar with. The Flexitarian Diet is the marriage between pure vegetarianism most of the time with occasionally meat, seafood or poultry added on special occasions. Most of the diet’s protein comes from beans, eggs and peas. 

Experts say before you pick a diet, think about what worked or didn’t work for you the last time. Too restrictive diets can be hard to stick to, and the most effective and successful diets typically don’t consider any food off-limit.

MorningStar at Observatory Park is located in the popular South Denver neighborhood and scheduled to open in spring of 2023. Stretching Exercises Can Increase Flexibility, Improve Balance and Relieve Pain

For many years, people thought stretching exercises were done mainly to help athletes avoid injuries. Research now shows the value of stretching for older adults. The Harvard School of Medicine’s journal reports that doing “simple stretches just two or three times a week can dramatically help anyone increase flexibility, improve balance, and relieve the pain caused by muscle and joint stiffness.”  

Improving balance and increasing flexibility helps seniors retain the ability to do the things they need to do for their independence. If you are unable to get up from a chair or out of bed each morning, you will need assistance. Studies show stretching can also improve circulation, muscle control and coordination. In fact, the Journal of Gerontology reported on the results of a 12-month stretch and flex program for older adults, which found participants demonstrated positive changes in areas like physical fitness, self-efficacy, perceived functioning, and well-being. They also reported a decrease in pain.

It is important to talk to your doctor before you begin any new exercises including stretching. Once you get the go-ahead, experts say stretch at least 10 minutes twice a week; and do it after a five- or ten-minute walk or jog to warm up your muscles if possible. They say to take a deep breath, and to slowly exhale while holding the stretch for 30 seconds. Be sure not to stretch too far as to cause pain. For recommended stretches for seniors, check with your physical therapist or physician, or visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) website.

Age-related Macular Degeneration

Just as the rest of our body ages, so do our eyes. Older adults often complain of dry, teary or tired eyes and may have problems driving at night, experience flashes and floaters or need glasses to read. As we grow older we are also at a higher risk for serious eye diseases that can impact our vision. 

One of the most common and serious eye diseases is age-related macular degeneration and is a leading cause of vision loss among people aged 50 and older. The American Macular Degeneration Foundation reports age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is more common than cataracts and glaucoma combined. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention projects by 2050 the number of older Americans with the disease will nearly double from 48 million to 88 million.  

Age-related macular degeneration causes the macula, a part of the back of the eye near the retina, to deteriorate. Experts say while it doesn’t impact peripheral vision, macular degeneration can affect how well a person sees what’s right in front of them.

You are at a higher risk of getting AMD if a relative has had it or you are Caucasians, and white females tend to come down with AMD earlier than white males. Lifestyle choices also increase your risk for AMD including smoking along with elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Sun exposure is another risk factor and doctors recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods high in antioxidants like lutein found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are beneficial for our eye health.

Symptoms of AMD include visual distortions and can make straight lines appear bent, reduce central vision in one or both eyes, increase blurriness of printed words, and the need for brighter light when reading or doing close-up work. The first signs of AMD are typically discovered by an eye doctor during an annual dilated eye exam.

What is the Difference between Memory Care & Assisted Living?

The US Department of Human Health & Services estimates, “About 70% of adults older than 65 will need long-term care at some point in their lives.” Moreover many who require senior care have some type of cognitive decline or memory loss. The World Health Organization reports 55 million people worldwide have dementia and nearly 10 million new cases are diagnosed each year. 

Before you begin the search for senior care, it is important to know the difference between assisted living and memory care. One of the top differences is the amount of attention given to memory care residents. New Technology Helps Seniors Live Fuller Lives

The US Census Bureau shows by 2030 as many as one in five Americans will be 65 years or older, and by the mid-30s, there will be slightly more people over 65 than people 18 years or younger. Our increasingly older population is due to better health care enabling people to live longer. Scientific advancements should also help people maintain better cognitive health.

The large population of seniors has led to tech companies addressing their various needs with new devices designed to make them more independent and live fuller lives. Problems like medication management are being addressed by smart medication management systems that can handle up to as many as ten different medications. Reminders are connected to WI-FI and can even go to family members if the person misses a dose.

COVID-19 taught us the advantages of Telemedicine and is ideal even now for those who may have mobility issues or no longer drive. Video systems like Zoom, Skype or Facebook allow seniors to stay connected to loved ones face-to-face. Really, is nothing better than having a video chat with the grandkids or a friend who lives a distance away? Another technological advancement protecting the safety of an elderly loved one is fall detector systems. Safely Tips for the Use of Prescription Drugs

It may surprise you to know that according to the Department of Health and Human Services, each year fifty-five percent of seniors are non-compliant with prescription drug orders and do not take medication as prescribed by their doctors. It is a serious problem as approximately 200,000 older adults are hospitalized annually due to adverse drug reactions. 

Medical professionals say there are steps seniors and those who care for an elderly loved one can do to help lessen the problem. To start with, take medications as prescribed including the correct dosage and time, with or without food, and never crush a pill into a powder. Especially if you see multiple doctors, be sure to always bring a list and dosage of all medications you are taking including over-the-counter and herbal supplements. 

Experts say using the same pharmacy can help reduce drug interactions, and to be sure to read the warnings regarding adverse reactions. Periodically review your prescriptions with your doctors to make sure you are taking the right dosage and still need the medications. To see if any meds you take have a warning for usage in the elderly, check the American Geriatric Society’s “2019 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.” It is also recommended you properly dispose of older medications and drugs you no longer take.  

If you are on medications to treat diabetes or high blood pressure, you need to continue to test your glucose level and BP numbers. Other drugs may be prescribed with the understanding you will have your blood tested periodically and it is important to follow through as too high or too little of a dosage can cause problems.
