The Link Between Gum Disease and Increased Risk of Alzheimer’s

February 20, 2023 by MorningStar Living in memory care

Researchers at Tuft University reported a link between gum disease, also known as periodontitis and periodontal disease, to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontitis is a bacterial infection within the soft tissue of the mouth, and “about 47.2% of U.S. adults over 30 and 70% over 65 have gum disease,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The study, which was done with mice, discovered the correlation, but researchers hope the findings can be used to someday help reduce cases of Alzheimer’s disease. The authors cite Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a bacterium that causes gum disease and is already linked to kidney disease, diabetes and coronary problems to be the problem.

The lead author, Dr. Jake Jinkun Chen, professor of periodontology and director of the Division of Oral Biology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine explains the purpose of the study is to identify and characterize the association of induced periodontal disease with Alzheimer’s disease. He says as F. nucleatum generates “inflammation both locally and systemically, it affects the Alzheimer’s disease phenotype, as Alzheimer’s itself is an inflammatory disease.” Additionally, since the bacteria migrate and penetrate the brain, it can worsen the symptoms and signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers plan further studies in humans and say although there is not a proven link yet; good oral health benefits our overall health. They also say to decrease our risk for Alzheimer’s, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.

As Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases progress, a loved one may need more care than they can get living at home. Strength Training Exercises for Seniors

February 20, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

Strength training is an important way that seniors can maintain their mobility; range of motion; and of course, strength. However, it is important to understand that not all seniors can do every exercise; so start small. Even the smallest stretches and exercises can be built off of to get results. Here are a few perfect strength training exercises for those living in senior housing in Everett, WA.

Dead Bugs

This exercise is very simple, and will require enough room for everyone to lay down on their backs. Then, everyone should raise their arms straight up into the air, while lifting their legs up with knees bent. Fingers should be pointing to the ceiling, and shins should be making a little table. Keep in mind that everyone should just be doing what they can, so they are not overextending themselves. The next step is to straighten and lower the left leg while also laying the right arm down and back so that it is reaching over the head. Finally, return to the original position, and repeat with the right leg and left arm. Repeat this process as many times as everyone is able. Dead bugs are a great way to work on coordination, core strength, and overall balance.

Toe Stands

Toe stands are a perfect, easy exercise that can help strengthen the ankles and calves. This can help with balance, as well as improve steadiness while walking. To practice toe stands with seniors in assisted living in Everett, start by giving everyone a sturdy chair. Have everyone face the back of their chair, and place their hands on it for balance. (A counter or table top can also be used, as long as there is something for stability to hold on to.) Next, everyone should stand with their feet shoulder width apart, and slowly raise up onto their toes as far as they can. Hold this position for five seconds, and then slowly release. Repeat this as many times as everyone can.

Wall Push-Ups

The last strength training exercise that is perfect for seniors is the wall push-up. This is basically a much more accessible version of a floor push-up. All that is needed for this exercise is a nice, empty wall. Have everyone stand about arm’s length away from the wall, so that they can place their hands flat against the wall while still keeping their arms straight and feet flat on the floor. Next, have everyone slowly lean into the wall as far as they can while bending their elbows and keeping their feet in place. Hold for five seconds if possible, and then slowly have them push themselves back to their original position. Repeat this as many times as everyone can.

Best Foods for Senior Heart Health

February 17, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

Heart health is a very commonly discussed and important topic for seniors to be aware of. As we age, so do all of our muscles, organs, bones, and everything in between. This is why being proactive about heart health is so vital for the elderly community. In this post, we will be covering some of the best foods for senior heart health for those living in senior housing in Everett, WA.

Avocados

According to a study by the Journal of the American Heart Association, eating avocados may reduce your risk of cardiovascular events. Avocados are full of nutrients like fiber, magnesium, potassium, fatty acids, and more that are generally related to heart health.

Beans

Beans offer a lot of protein, fiber, potassium, folate, iron, and more. The best part is that they provide all of this while also being low-fat and even helping reduce bad cholesterol. The best beans for seniors to eat for heart health are: chickpeas, black beans, soy beans, pinto beans, and navy beans.

Berries

Antioxidants and fiber are both important to promote heart health for seniors. Luckily, there’s a sweet, fruity treat that has both of these nutrients and more. This amazing snack is also known as a berry! Berries like blackberries, blueberries, cherries, raspberries, and strawberries are all great additions to a heart healthy diet for seniors in assisted living in Everett.

Fish

Omega-3 fatty acids are known for slowing down artery hardening, as well as lowering the likelihood of developing an irregular heartbeat. The best fish to eat to take full advantage of these fatty acids include: anchovies, black cod, bluefin tuna, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines, and trout.

Green Tea

Polyphenol antioxidants can help keep senior arteries more flexible, as well as preventing plaque from building up in them. Green tea is a great source for these kinds of antioxidants, as well as providing amino acids, and several vitamins and minerals.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens like spinach are high in folate; which helps the body create and maintain healthy red blood cells. This helps to keep seniors’ circulatory systems in check, which in turn helps improve heart health. Consider adding beet greens, chard, collard greens, mustard greens, and turnip greens to your diet if you are a senior trying to transition into a more heart healthy diet.

3 Spring Fun Ideas for Seniors

February 15, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

Spring is a time of new life, temperate weather, and wonderful opportunities for fun activities for those in assisted living in Everett. Winter can be a time when seasonal depression can have a huge impact on seniors. This makes springtime activities even more exciting for the elderly. Here, you’ll find three spring fun ideas for seniors that you can use to get rid of the wintertime blues, and enjoy the new season!

Bird Feeding/Watching

Whether your senior loved ones are very mobile or not, bird feeding and bird watching are both enjoyable and easy springtime activities. A perfect way to make a DIY birdfeeder is to spread peanut butter over some pinecones, then sprinkle with wild bird seeds. Then, you can hang them all around the community for everyone to enjoy. If DIY birdfeeders will not work for everyone, you can always simply purchase some ready-made feeders that can be placed throughout the community as well. Either way, your senior loved ones will have a wonderful time watching and maybe even learning to identify all the local birds. Those living in senior housing in Everett, WA will be sure to fall in love with this activity.

Photography

Photography is a very interesting activity that just about anyone can enjoy. Whether your senior loved ones have a real camera, a phone camera, or a disposable camera, taking photos of all the new growth of springtime can be a very rewarding hobby. You can even turn it into a scavenger hunt, where you all work together to take as many photos as you can off of a premade list. Then, everyone gets together to share all the photos they took. Not only is this a great way to be active, it also allows seniors to unlock their creativity by finding new perspectives on things they see every day.

Picnics

Picnics are another amazing springtime activity that gets everyone outside, spending time together, and making wonderful memories with each other. It can also be the perfect way for families to share recipes with each other. Picnics are also the perfect opportunity to incorporate some outdoor games like horseshoes, cornhole, lawn darts, and more. Having a picnic outside in the springtime is a perfect way to enjoy all the beauty of the outdoors, and welcome the new season.

Skin Care Tips for Seniors

February 13, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

If there is anything that is the most clearly impacted by age, it’s the skin. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity, and natural collagen levels drop. This results in the wrinkles and thinning of the skin that you may already be familiar with if you are a senior, or have any senior loved ones. Below, we will be discussing some skin care tips for seniors in assisted living in Everett.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Many everyday products that are commonly used are full of harsh chemicals and toxic ingredients. One of the main things to avoid in products you put on your skin as a senior is anything containing “fragrance.” This word is used as an umbrella term for any combination of over 300 different chemicals. These chemicals are rarely listed individually due to proprietary blending, so choosing “fragrance-free” options can protect you from them all. Other chemicals to avoid include: 1, 4 dioxane, alcohol, ammonium salt/quaternium-15, chlorine, formaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide, parabens, phenoxyethanol/rose ether, polyethylene glycol, sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate,

 synthetic glycerine, toluene, and triclosan.

Be Protective

If you are an elderly person in senior housing in Everett, WA, being proactive about your skin health should be a high priority. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to make sure you are always protecting your skin. Using gloves when needed, applying sunscreen when outdoors, and checking out new or changing growths are all great strategies to adhere to when it comes to protecting your skin.

Use proper gloves to protect your hands while gardening, handling sharp objects, or working with your hands in any capacity. This will ensure that you are less likely to develop blisters, get cuts and scrapes, and/or be burnt by any chemicals you are using.

Applying sunscreen before going outside is also important to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation. Use sunscreen that is at least SPF 30, and try to stay in shady areas as much as possible when spending time outdoors.

Another way to protect your skin is to be vigilant about any changing or new growths on it. Get checked out whenever you notice anything new on your skin, and make sure nothing has changed about anything that isn’t new. This can help you catch things like cancer much earlier than you would without getting things checked out.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Aging skin is very prone to becoming dried out, so moisturizing is vital for keeping this issue under control. Use skin care products that are specifically formulated for providing moisture, use a humidifier if the air is dry where you are, and make sure you stay well hydrated. All of these things working together can help you retain more moisture in your skin, and prevent all the issues that arise from having dry skin. Dry skin is itchy, more likely to tear, and is just generally uncomfortable.

3 Reasons Medjool Dates are Good for You

February 10, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

Medjool dates are a truly delicious, often overlooked fruit. However, they are actually very nutritious, as well as being naturally sweet! Consider medjool dates as nature’s healthy version of candy. Keep reading to find out all the reasons medjool dates are good for you, especially if you are a senior in asenior in assisted living in Everettsisted living in Everett.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants protect the body from free radicals, which could help prevent things like cancer, heart disease, and oxidative damage to your cells. There are many kinds of antioxidants though, and the ones you can find in medjool dates include: carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. All of these have been found to be anti-inflammatory, as well as anti-cancer, and protective of neural functions. Another reason to choose medjool dates for their antioxidants is that they actually contain a higher concentration of them compared to prunes and figs.

Digestive Health

Medjool dates are a great source of fiber, which is known for helping aid digestion, as well as improving frequency/regularity and preventing constipation. Fiber is also vital for helping to keep blood sugar regulated, and can even help keep your appetite in check. If you have high LDL, (bad cholesterol) fiber can also help to reduce it as well. If you are an elderly person living in senior housing in Everett, WA, consider adding medjool dates to your diet in order to take advantage of their amazing fiber content.

Heart Health

Thanks to the fiber and antioxidants contained in medjool dates, your heart and circulatory system overall is well taken care of. Fiber’s ability to reduce bad cholesterol and prevent artery blockages can reduce your risk of developing heart disease. Plus, the antioxidants found in medjool dates have been linked to contributing to heart health by being highly anti-inflammatory.

Keep in mind that medjool dates usually come with large seeds in the center, so be careful of biting into them while eating. These seeds can be very hard; but by eating all the flesh around them, you can benefit from all the amazing nutrients found in these fabulous fruits.

Tips for Chronic Pain

February 06, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Aging often brings with it a lot of aches and pains. However, many seniors are victims of chronic pains that could be brought on by conditions other than simple wear and tear on the body. Chronic pain can be very debilitating and exhausting to deal with; so read on for some tips for dealing with chronic pain.

Massage

Massaging aching muscles and joints is not only a great pain reliever, but it also helps move fluid/toxins through the lymphatic system, improves circulation, and even helps keep the skin soft thanks to the lotions/oils used. A masseuse can also target specific areas of the body to offer the most relief possible. There are also some services many spas/massage therapists will provide that help with chronic pain; such as cupping, acupuncture, hot stones, saunas, and more. Check around your area of senior housing in Everett, WA for locations that offer treatments that interest you.

Medication & Supplements

Many seniors are on medications to stay healthy. However, natural options can also be helpful for chronic pain management if you consult with your doctor(s) on the best way to add natural supplements to your regimen. Not every supplement is safe with every medication, so make sure you work together with your primary care physician to find out what combinations and doses are safe for you. It is also important to ensure that you are taking the proper prescribed medications at the right times, and in the correct doses to get the best results for conditions you may have. If supplements are not practical for you, then you can make an effort to have a healthier diet in order to give your body more of the nutrients it needs to function at its best. If you live in assisted living in Everett, ask the kitchen manager about nutritional facts for your meals to show your doctor for any advice on possible changes.

Movement

It can be easy to want to stay still/in bed all day when going through chronic pain. However, this can actually make your pain worse. If you don’t allow yourself to move around when you are in pain, then you could lose even more mobility/range of motion, weaken your muscles, and be unable to focus on anything except your pain. Movement and exercise helps keep the rest of your body functioning better, so that you can possibly avoid new pains in the future. It also helps to give yourself something to do to distract you from the chronic pain you are experiencing. Even a short walk outside in the sunshine can work wonders for your mental and physical health when you are trying to cope with chronic pain.

Tips to Recall and Improve Memories

February 06, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Many of us occasionally forget where we put our keys; forget an appointment or the name of a new acquaintance. Experts say this is common and usually not serious but just a sign the person is too preoccupied and busy. However consistent memory problems that start to interfere with a person’s day-to-day life may be a sign of a bigger problem.

Memory loss can be caused by a number of things such as genetics, age, and medical conditions affecting the brain. If you are experiencing more than your share of memory problems, experts say there are a number of things you can do. These include lifestyle changes like improving diet, exercising and avoiding smoking as well as talking to your doctor regarding current health conditions and medications you are taking.

Experts say we can also train our brain to think better much as we do with exercise to improve muscle strength. Mental workouts can expand and challenge our brains, which may improve memory. A large trial from the journal PLoS One, reports study participants who did just 15 minutes of brain training activities for at least five days a week showed improvement in brain functions. Their activities focused on quick recall and the ability to memorize patterns.

Other activities related to improving brain health include exercising, meditating, getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet. Several studies show drinking coffee or green teas with caffeine can improve memory as does eating dark chocolate. However researchers advise against eating foods high in sugar or calorie content as it may lead to high levels of inflammation in parts of the brain, and affect memory.

MorningStar at San Tomas specializes in caring for seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Our holistic approach to senior living includes purposeful activities to stimulate or calm whatever the extent of memory loss may be. Our new senior living community is located in West San Jose in Santa Clara County and is now leasing suites as we open to residents this spring. Senior Self Care Tips

February 03, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

As we age, self care can become one of those things we start to neglect. However, self care in the senior community is vital for quality of life, health, and happiness. In this post, we will be sharing some senior self care tips that are low maintenance, yet still very effective.

Get Some Fresh Air

Whether it’s going for a jog, or simply sitting out in the sunshine, being outside in the fresh air is an amazing and healing way to practice self care. There are all kinds of activities to do outside, no matter how low or high your energy levels may be. Want to really get your body moving? Try going for a bike ride or flying a kite! Not feeling like expending a lot of energy? Try feeding the squirrels/birds around with some healthy seeds, or reading a book outside. No matter what you like to do, chances are you can incorporate the great outdoors into it somehow. Even if you live in assisted living or senior housing in Everett, WA, you should still get outside for fun activities; so don’t let where you live stop you!

Keep Newness Coming

It can be easy to stop learning and trying new things as we get older, but this is something we should do for our entire lives. Trying and learning new things is good for your brain, and gives you a lot to look forward to as you consider your future. No matter how big or small, make an effort to try/learn at least one new thing every day. If that seems too daunting, try one new thing a week! Whatever timeline makes you the most comfortable, as long as you are proactive and open to trying/learning new things, you may be surprised what you end up enjoying.

Let Someone Take Care of You

Sometimes, you just want someone else to take care of you. Whether it’s someone getting you groceries, going to a spa/massage parlor, or moving into assisted living in Everett, letting others take care of you can be one of the best things you can do for yourself. This can be scary if you are worried about losing your independence; but even younger people let themselves get spoiled sometimes! Just because you are older, doesn’t mean that you don’t deserve to be pampered and taken care of anymore. Even something as simple as eating a meal in a restaurant can be a great way to give yourself a break.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. A New Way to Help Those with Alzheimer’s Recall Memories

February 03, 2023 by MorningStar Living in memory care

An interesting study out of the University of Toronto, and reported by The Medical News Today, introduces a smartphone app for people with memory impairments that may help reinforce their memories of life events. Researchers explain the HippoCamera app imitates the function of the hippocampus by consolidating a person’s memories. The hippocampus is believed to repeatedly replay memories to the rest of the brain at a high speed to help stabilize them for long-term recall.

Researchers explain the app works by recording everyday events in the person’s life and repeatedly playing them back to the person. They say the broader point of helping those with Alzheimer’s remember the events the HippoCamera recorded may be that remembering those things might result in a renewed ability to recall and share experiences. The lead study author, Dr. Chris Martin, says, “If you can better recall a specific moment from your recent past, you will have a stronger mental bridge between your present and past self.”

The study found people who used the app for two weeks experienced a 56% increase in their ability to recall the details of events recorded with the HippoCamera. People who used it for 70 consecutive days saw an 84% increase. Prof. Morgan D. Barense, senior investigator of the study and a cognitive neuropsychologist, says people also reported back the emotions they felt at the time and the people who were there. She adds their findings could encourage people to get into the habit of focusing on their memories and realizing there are simple things we can do to preserve memories.

MorningStar at San Tomas takes a holistic approach to memory care starting with developing a personalized service plan to address needs and provide a gentle flow of daily activities to calm or stimulate. Visit our website for more information and to talk to our team about our all-inclusive memory care facility. We opened to residents in spring and are now leasing. Thinking About Buying a Hearing Aid Over-the-Counter?

February 03, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Retirement Communities

Did you know the FDA recently made changes to regulations regarding hearing aids, which now makes it possible to buy an FDA approved device over-the-counter? While many of us have heard about the huge cost of buying a hearing aid and that Medicare typically does not cover one, you may want to know whether the experts think it is a good idea.

The Harvard Medical School went to Dr. James Naples, assistant professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, to see if it is a viable option and to explain potential pros and cons. He explains despite there being several types of hearing aids, they all amplify sound and use a combination of signaling processing and directional microphones to filter out background noise. However he warns against confusing personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) with hearing aids as they only amplify sound.

To determine your level of hearing loss, experts recommend starting by getting a hearing test from an audiologist like you would get an exam from an optometrist when buying eyeglasses. This is especially necessary for a severe hearing loss. For a mild to moderate hearing loss, you will probably be okay getting an OTC device without a hearing test by an audiologist.

The next question routinely asked is if you will save money by purchasing an OTC hearing aid and the answer is most-likely yes as right now the average hearing aid runs anywhere between $2,000 to $4,000 per ear, and age-related hearing loss may be in one or both ears. OTC also helps reduce the price by eliminating the added expense of the hearing test along with the actual device being substantially lower. Doctors say the new regulations should increase competition and some early estimates are prices could drop by as much as $1,600.

Dr. Naples cautions that just as drugstore readers are a great option for many, some individuals have more complicated issues that require more precise solutions. Hearing aids are the same. The doctor states the safest bet is to get a hearing test first.

MorningStar at Observatory Park is one of the finest retirement communities in the Denver area and offers assisted living and memory care. We open to residents in spring 2023 and our premium suites are filling up fast. Contact us today to ask about availability and pricing as well as exclusive savings for early depositors.

How to Help Seniors Overcome Loneliness

February 01, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

Seniors are often prone to developing quite a bit of loneliness. Being a senior comes with a lot of life changes; and often requires those changes to happen very quickly. Without the proper support and encouragement, loneliness can manifest in many ways. Below, we will be discussing how to help seniors overcome loneliness, and how to best support them through all the changes they are facing in this season of life.

Utilize Technology

Friends and family members who may live far away can use technology to stay in touch with the seniors in their lives. Video chats, online gaming, sharing photos, and more are all ways to connect with senior loved ones who may not be easy to visit a lot. You can also get creative and try doing different activities together over video; such as crafts, cooking, watching movies/shows, learning something together, etc. This activity can even help if your loved one lives in assisted living in Everett, or elsewhere.

Join Classes

You’re never too old to learn something new; and seniors usually have a lot of free time that can be overwhelming to deal with. This is when classes can be a great resource to take advantage of to combat loneliness. Check out local classes, or even classes offered by the assisted living/senior housing community your senior loved one lives in. Painting, knitting/crochet, languages, photography, dance, and other interests are generally easy to find locally; and even online! Whatever your elderly loved one wants to try, give them encouragement and support to give it a go and combat their loneliness.

Adopt a Furry (or not so furry) Friend

Animals are a wonderful addition to anyone’s life; but especially seniors who may be prone to loneliness. If your senior loved one has the ability to care for a pet, consider visiting a shelter to help them adopt one. Depending on their needs/abilities, they may even be eligible for a service animal that can also be a wonderful companion for them. However, if a service animal isn’t needed, there are still tons of choices that can help your loved one feel less lonely by giving them a sense of purpose. Senior housing in Everett, WA is often pet-friendly as well, so make sure to look into community guidelines ahead of time.

Strategies to Deal with Sleep Problems for Individuals with Alzheimer’s

February 01, 2023 by MorningStar Living in memory care

While we know many people with Alzheimer’s experience sleep problems, experts are not sure why. They only know the changes in the person’s brain somehow seem to affect sleep patterns. Studies suggest the most severe changes happen in the later stages of the disease but some people can develop problems early-on.

Types of changes include waking up at night more often and staying awake for longer periods. Brain wave studies show a decrease in both dreaming and non-dreaming sleep stages in Alzheimer’s patients. The person may feel restless and unable to lie still, resulting in behaviors like wandering or yelling and calling out.

In the later stages of Alzheimer’s, many “individuals spend about 40 percent of their time in bed at night awake and a significant part of their daytime sleeping.” In some cases, a person may reverse their sleep pattern completely by sleeping during the day and being unable to sleep at night.

The condition known as “sundowning” can cause a person to begin to feel agitated as dusk approaches and can go on throughout the night. Symptoms include an increase in confusion, anxiety, pacing and disorientation. Other problems triggering sleep disruptions may be from depression, restless leg syndrome, and sleep apnea. Most medical professionals including the NIH agree non-drug treatments are the safest solution as sleep medications can result in falls and other risk factors such as faster cognitive decline and outweigh their benefits.

Measures to encourage a good night sleep include keeping routine hours for meals and bedtimes. Use the bed only as a place to sleep, and try to expose the person to morning sunlight. Daily exercise should help the person feel tired at night but do it at least four hours before bed as well as avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Ensure the person is warm or cool enough and provide security items and nightlights.

Online Classes can Broaden a Senior’s World

February 01, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

For many seniors, mobility issues, no longer driving or not wanting to go outside during the cold winter months, can lead to boredom or feeling isolated. If you have gotten tired of endless games of solitaire on your computer or tablet, you should know the Internet has a lot more to offer seniors.

Senior Planet sponsored by AARP is one option for targeted classes for older adults. Their calendar includes classes on finance, wellness, fitness, and computer and technology, and allows you to get in touch with a whole community of fellow life-long learners. Classes range from things like tai chi, chair yoga and building stronger bones to open discussions on topics such as the latest trends in technology or holistic wellness. Senior Planet’s calendar lists dates and times of classes and uses Zoom as a meeting platform.

The Online Course Report offers a lineup of free courses that again just require a smartphone, tablet or computer. One highlighted class is called “The Path to Happiness and Good Quality of Life.” Instructor Graciela H. Tonon from the Universidad de Palermo, “goes over the concepts of happiness and quality of life for people through different stages in their life.” Another interesting offering is, “Art Essentials: Learn Watercolor Painting Basics.” All of their classes can be done at any time and designed to let you go at your own pace.

This is just a small sampling of the many free educational and entertaining offerings on the Internet targeted to seniors. We recommend also checking with your library for courses they may have available.

The MorningStar at Observatory Park is a new senior living community scheduled to open in spring 2023. Located in the desirable South Denver neighborhood close to Observatory Park, we have 60 assisted living suites in a variety of configurations and floorplans. For those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we provide compassionate, all-inclusive services. How Seniors Can Manage Stress and Anxiety

January 30, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Stress and anxiety are things that many people live with in this fast-paced world. However, for seniors, stress and anxiety can exacerbate a lot of health issues. This is why it is so important to know, as a senior, how to manage your stress and anxiety so that it is not managing you! Whether you live with family, or in senior housing in Everett, WA, stress/anxiety management is very important and helpful for your overall well-being.

Journaling/Creativity

Journaling is a wonderful way to manage your stress and anxiety because it allows you to be completely honest and raw with your thoughts and feelings in a safe place. However, don’t feel obligated to write things down in words if that’s not what comes naturally. You can use a journal for making drawings or paintings, and even as a planner to help you be able to plan your days. Your journal is personal to you, so don’t feel like you need to use it in a certain way. The main idea is to use your journal as a way to get your emotions out instead of bottling them up and becoming stressed and anxious about them.

Mindful Movement

Mindful movement is something that is exercise, but requires you to be just a little more mindful than typical repetitive exercises like situps or lifting weights. Things like yoga, tai chi, pilates, etc. are all examples of mindful movement. These types of exercises can help you relax, work on your breathing, and give you the benefits of regular exercise when practiced consistently. Each of these exercises is different, so you may need to try a few different ones before you find the one that works best for you. However, don’t give up if tai chi isn’t for you—maybe yoga or pilates is! Many seniors who live in assisted living in Everett participate in these kinds of classes, so just ask around your community to see what’s offered nearby.

Know The Signs

If you don’t know the signs of stress and anxiety, you won’t even know that you need to do something about it. Signs of stress and anxiety are different for everyone, but there are a few signs that are very common. With just a little self-reflection and honesty, you should be able to know whether or not you need to find ways to cope with stress/anxiety for the sake of your health. Here are some of the most common signs to watch for:

  • Back Pain

  • Concentration Issues

  • Crying

  • Difficulty Making Decisions

  • Heart Palpitations

  • Indigestion

  • Irritability/Edginess

  • Tension Headaches

Questions to Ask Your Doctor if You are Experiencing Memory Problems

January 30, 2023 by MorningStar Living in memory care

If you or a loved one is having memory problems, experts say it is important to work closely with your healthcare providers to determine what is going on. If the diagnosis is Alzheimer’s, a treatment plan will need to be created. However as Alzheimer’s is a progress disease, it is important to understand the plan will most-likely need to be updated and amended.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains the individual and their family members should be told of all available options along with the benefits and risks as the treatment plan evolves. The plan should take into account the person’s age and overall health, current medical conditions, treatment goals and the severity of symptoms and how they are impacting the person’s life. Another important consideration is the living situation of the person and the availability of the support they need.

To get started on a personalized treatment plan, the Alzheimer’s Association offers a list of questions you can ask of your medical team. These include determining if medications will interfere with drugs already being taken for other medical conditions. Also ask about possible side effects and what to look for; and if the person experiences any, does it mean they will not be able to continue taking the drug? In addition are there any problems with starting one drug and beginning another?

Another question to ask the doctor is how much time is needed before it can be determined if the medication is working. Moreover, is there a time when it should be stopped?

If a loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia and you are seeking the finest memory care, we invite you to take a look at MorningStar Memory Care at San Tomas. Our website offers lots of information regarding our memory care facility but we are available to answer any questions. We open to residents in spring and look forward to helping you reserve your select suite as we are NOW LEASING. Please ask us about Early Depositor Incentives.

Experts Vote on Best 2023 Diets

January 30, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

The U.S. News & World Report says statistics show that while over half of all Americans followed a diet in the past year, only 20 percent of them were able to keep the weight off for more than 12 months. Moreover according to the International Food Information Council, consumers in the U.S. spend 33 billion dollars annually on their diet plan.

This prompted the U.S. News & World Report to once again ask a panel of leading medical doctors, registered dietary nutritionists and nutritional epidemiologists specializing in diseases like heart and diabetes as well as weight loss to rate various diets for overall effectiveness. Each diet was rated for healthiness, safety, ease of following and promoting a healthy, sustainable lifestyle to meet people’s various lifestyles and goals. Also the general consensus is fad diets just don't work and some can even be dangerous.

For the sixth year in a row, the Mediterranean Diet, which follows the eating habits of those surrounding the Mediterranean Sea including Greece and Italy, took first place with high scores for overall health and sustainable as well as weight loss. The diet is based on eating plant-based foods like fruits and vegetables along with whole grains, beans, nuts, seafood, lean poultry and unsaturated fat from extra-virgin olive oil.

The DASH Diet (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) took second place and is promoted by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. It is intended to stop (or prevent) hypertension, also referred to as high blood pressure. It too endorses a flexible, balanced and heart-healthy eating plan.

Tying the DASH Diet for second place is one you may not be as familiar with. The Flexitarian Diet is the marriage between pure vegetarianism most of the time with occasionally meat, seafood or poultry added on special occasions. Most of the diet’s protein comes from beans, eggs and peas.

Experts say before you pick a diet, think about what worked or didn’t work for you the last time. Too restrictive diets can be hard to stick to, and the most effective and successful diets typically don’t consider any food off-limit.

Opening in spring 2023, MorningStar at Observatory Park is located in the desirable South Denver neighborhood just blocks from the iconic Observatory Park. Best Winter Activities for Seniors

January 27, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

Wintertime is a wonderful opportunity for seniors in assisted living in Everett to find fun activities to do when it is too cold to be outside a lot. Below, we’ve come up with some of the best winter activities for seniors to try out; whether they live independently, or with assistance.

Seed Starting

Winter is the perfect time for some indoor seed starting to prepare for springtime! All you need are some herb or wildflower seeds, some healthy soil, water, and small cups. Then, seeds can be placed in soil-filled cups with a little water. Leave your seeds where they can get some sun, and watch them sprout! A bonus tip is that your cups can be reused from washed yogurt cups and/or other recyclables to reduce waste.

Scrapbooking

The winter season is usually full of holidays for many people. This is a great time to put together any pictures that have been taken for these holidays—and even throughout the year! Seniors can make fun photo albums of their families; or work together to make an album of the fun things they have done with their senior housing in Everett, WA community. Creativity is a great way to pass time, stimulate the brain, and bring joy to share with the entire family and community!

Snow Globes

Mason jars, glitter, glue, and wintery miniatures are all you need for some gorgeous, homemade snow globes! Seniors can make or choose the miniatures they want to use, then glue them to the inside of the jar lid. Next, all they have to do is fill their jars with glitter, sequins, confetti, etc. and some water. Lastly, screw the decorated lid on and enjoy all the beautiful snow globes!

Book Club

Reading is fun all year long, but wintertime is absolutely perfect for getting cozy with a good book. Senior living communities can add a book club to their list of winter activities to help encourage the community to come together and learn about each other as well as the book they choose. It can be helpful to have a list of books to choose from, so the community can vote on which book they want to read first; then you can hold a new vote with the rest of the list so that everyone can have their favorite book read in the group.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating true homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest senior housing Everett, WA has to offer.

MorningStar’s Memory Care is guided by Lavender Sky, our proprietary signature program; and all of our dementia care specialists complete thorough training to help residents and their families navigate this challenging journey with love. Know the Difference between Probiotics and Prebiotics?

January 27, 2023 by MorningStar Living in Retirement Communities

The last several years have brought probiotics and prebiotics into the spotlight. However it can be confusing as to what the difference is between the two and the role they play in our bodies. Experts say both are important to our health; probiotics are beneficial bacteria, while prebiotics are food for these bacteria.

In other words, “Probiotics are live bacteria found in certain foods or supplements and can provide numerous health benefits. Prebiotics are substances from types of carbs (mostly fiber) that humans can’t digest. The beneficial bacteria in your gut eat this fiber.”

The Harvard Medical School explains our large intestine has 100 trillion good bacteria essential to our health called microbiome. These good microbes help maintain healthy bowel function. Each person has their own unique microbiome from birth and we add to the good microbes by the food we consume. Although a diet high in sugar and fats can negatively affect gut health by encouraging the growth of bad bacteria, allowing them to grow faster and colonize more easily, without as many helpful bacteria to prevent it from happening.

Research shows certain foods like yogurt and kefirs with live, active cultures are beneficial to adding to our microbiome. Unpasteurized, fermented foods like kombucha, miso, sauerkraut and sour pickles contain healthy microbes but most packaged fermented foods are pasteurized, which destroys the microbes. The best way to get around that is to look up recipes to ferment foods at home.

Experts say while there are many probiotic supplements on the market, it is not easy to find exactly what you need. Most probiotic supplements contain just a few bacterial strains, compared to the approximately 3,000 or so stains naturally found in the gut. Also some bacteria are better suited to treat certain conditions but a general guideline is to purchase one with both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.

MorningStar at Observatory Park senior living community is one of the area’s newest retirement communities, and specializes in providing seniors with “a little help” to enable them to live as independently as possible. Our unique location in South Denver’s historic Observatory Park area offers both assisted living and memory care.  Visit our website today and ask about savings for early depositors; we open to residents in spring 2023.
