Get an Individualized Care Plan at MorningStar

August 24, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Families often wonder how assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Silver Lake determine the level of care for residents. We want to reassure you there is no need to worry mom or dad’s needs will not be addressed as our job includes creating and routinely re-evaluating residents’ individualized care plan designed for their wellbeing and safety.

Once you and your family decide MorningStar is the best fit, we invite you to sit down with our Wellness Director to come up with a specialized care plan based on five levels of care – basic through level 4. Additionally, monthly fees are determined by the square footage and location of your suite within the building and the view. We offer spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans.

Our care services take into account the cost and time of providing each service such as assistance with dressing and bathing. The result is a highly Individualized Service Plan that offers the right amount of assistance when you need it. Medication management is included in Level 1. Other various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, are priced a la carte.

We believe wellness of mind, body and spirit is a joint effort between our remarkable residents and team members. Between clinical services and our life enrichment programs and activities, we work hard to be a breath of fresh air; and look for creative solutions that offer a higher quality of care at a lower cost to families. Working within the scope of our licensing with the Department of Health, we try to find ways to extend the stay of our residents even as health conditions change.

Along with assisted living, we offer independent living with a choice of apartments designed to provide carefree retirement years. For your ultimate comfort, we offer an array of luxury amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. Visit our website for more on the finest independent living & assisted living Everett offers.

MorningStar Offers Support to Philanthropic Initiatives at Home and Abroad

August 24, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Retirement Communities

MorningStar of San Jose is part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, whose mission is to “cast a new light on senior living.” We start by creating a true home for the residents in our communities, made possible by a dedicated team who understands the highest expression of living is to share their gifts and talents, time and energy with others.

The scope of our Vision to love and honor also includes impacting the world for good through the MorningStar Foundation, and offering support to philanthropic initiatives within our local neighborhoods and around the world. One such project is our support to the people of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua. We serve not only the children of the Casa Bernabé orphanage but holistically serve the impoverished area. We also are proud to support Lifewater, whose Healthy Village strategy focuses not just on their delivery of a safe water point, but on the villagers’ monitored adoption of hygiene habits in each and every home.

Closer to home, MorningStar’s retirement communities are great supporters of the Alzheimer’s Association. We participate in events throughout the year including the “Longest Day Celebration” (summer solstice), which was on June 21st this year. Our uplifting celebrations include hosting fundraisers of every sort, balloon releases, games, food and more. Additionally, our communities participate in the “Walk to End Alzheimer's,” either by walking, sponsoring or hosting other creative ways to raise funds. Other efforts include doing our share by volunteering with local nonprofits to help where there is a need.

MorningStar of San Jose is currently under construction and due to open in June 2023. We will have 69 assisted living suites and another 34 memory care suites in a variety of floorplans and configurations. Alzheimer’s Disease Affects a Person’s Physical Abilities

August 24, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Retirement Communities

Along with changes in the person’s memory and cognitive abilities, Alzheimer’s disease affects a person’s physical abilities. Experts explain dementia symptoms can change everything from the way a person walks, talks, and how their body works. Normal body functions such as going to the bathroom, carrying on a conversation and maintaining balance become more and more difficult.

While unfortunately we do not yet know the cause of Alzheimer’s, doctors think the symptoms are caused by a buildup of harmful proteins in the brain called amyloid and tau, which create clumps called tangles and plaque. These clumps get in the way of normal brain functions and kill healthy cells.

Changes caused by Alzheimer’s include loss of balance and coordination, which puts a person at a higher risk of a fall. A person’s feet may shuffle or drag along as they walk. Another symptom includes weakened muscles and fatigue that makes it difficult to stand or sit upright in a chair. Trouble controlling the bladder and bowels as well as seizures and twitches are other common symptoms.

While some people experience a slower pace of the disease and live up to 20 years after a diagnosis, the average life expectancy is 4 to 8 years. The most common cause of death in a person with Alzheimer’s is pneumonia, another infection, or a heart attack.

If you are looking for comprehensive, compassionate Alzheimers care for a loved one in Albuquerque, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Observatory Park. Memory Care San Jose: Specialized Through a Lavender Sky

August 22, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Memory Care Facility

It can be a very difficult day when a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Families often question what the future will look like. Not only for them, but for their loved one, as well. Fear is often associated around a memory loss diagnosis, and it can be easy to fall into rumination of worry, distrust, and anxiety. MorningStar Memory Care Facility at West Valley is a specially designed assisted living community that offers an environment focused on dementia care and improving quality of life through a holistic approach called, “Lavender Sky.”

At MorningStar West Valley, our mantra, “Lavender Sky,” is the exploration within a memory loss diagnosis, such as Alzheimer’s. Embracing the diagnosis, instead of being fearful of it, allows caretakers to expand their knowledge and understanding of what it means to have Alzheimer’s and how to better care for our residents. Through a “Lavender Sky,” we vow to be a leading community for memory care and dementia care. In doing so, we connect more with our residents and provide better, personalized care in an extraordinary way.

Using holistic methods such as music, art, dance, aromatherapy, and animals, allows us to thoughtfully “enter, embrace, and explore” the world of dementia.  Regardless of the extent of the memory loss, we know the essence of the person remains, and our job is to connect with and nurture that essence as we put our energies toward finding ways to celebrate and elevate life. As a leading memory care facility dedicated to dementia care, we understand that treating the unique person is more beneficial than treating the illness. Everyone handles their diagnosis differently and each resident requires a different level of care or supervision.

Please contact us to learn more about senior living at MorningStar’s memory care facility. Our staff is happy to answer any questions you have. Our website also provides information on our company’s history, vision, and mission which discusses our exceptional senior living in West San Jose that seniors can rely on.

If You Are Experiencing Memory Problems, It is Important to See Your Doctor

August 22, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Alzheimers Care

Experts say typically an individual’s memory problems start slowly and are initially only known to them. Dr. Martin Albers, assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, calls this stage “subjective cognitive decline, where the person senses that they’re having some cognitive issues with short-term memory and word-finding, particularly with proper names.” Other early signs include visual perception problems like confusing words or reversing numbers but are typically easy to work around and to live pretty normally.

When memory loss is caused by Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, symptoms get progressively worse. Dr. Albers says it is important to be medically screened and your first visit should be with your primary healthcare provider. They can assess you both physically and mentally including doing a complete medical history, family history, social history, current medication list and a review of any loss of abilities with day-to-day activities.

You may be given a cognitive exam like SAGE (self-administered gerocognitive exam) or the MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment). Blood tests typically include cholesterol, B12 and other markers to indicate how well your liver and thyroid are functioning as well as a CT scan or an MRI.

While Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, it is important to remember there are other things that may be causing memory problems such as strokes, heart, liver or kidney disease; diabetes and medications. Once a problem is identified, experts say the best doctors to add to your medical team are those with a special interest in cognitive disorders such as geriatricians or neurologists. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides a list of clinical trials that may offer some alternative options for treatment.

At MorningStar at North Ridge, a memory care community in Albuquerque, we have 38 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Please visit our website to learn more about our home, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.

Study Shows the Benefits of Walking for Seniors

August 22, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Retirement Communities

A study from the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) trial concluded that if you want to remain mobile and healthy in old age, you should start walking.  Furthermore, it says even if you are already well into old age, it is not too late to reap the benefits.

The 2½ year trial included more than 1,600 men and women between the ages of 70 and 89, of whom none had exercised regularly; and all were relatively frail.  The study authors say half of the participants took part in a daily exercise plan that included walking in addition to strength and balance exercises.  The other half of the group did some gentle stretching routines and took part in healthy aging educational workshops.

Researchers found that those who were assigned to the exercise group were “28% less likely to have become disabled (defined by the inability to walk about 400 yards without help) compared to those in the education group. They were also 18% less likely to have had any episode of physical disability.”  The study’s authors believe the results would be even more marked if those in the “healthy aging workshops” had not discovered the benefits of exercising on their own.

Walking is easy to do and does not require special equipment other than a pair of good walking shoes.  If you are a senior who wants to start exercising, medical professionals say consult your healthcare provider, and slowly and gradually work your way toward longer distances.

At MorningStar at Silver Lake, we value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals and are committed to creating a retirement communities that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  Along with our fitness center, residents have many opportunities to exercise and keep moving.   Visit our website to see what sets our community apart from other senior housing in Everett, and why our residents are happy to call MorningStar “home.”

Moving Forward After a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

August 22, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

When a person is told they have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, it is extremely difficult not only for the individual but the entire family. As it generally comes after the person as well as their family and friends have noticed a marked change in the individual, it is tough to hear but not always a huge surprise. Now the question becomes “what next?”

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) offers families guidance with a list of helpful informative and supportive resources including the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Check if they have local chapters where you can get in-person support, meet others in your same situation, and get involved in fundraising activities. You can additionally reach out to local community centers and hospitals to find out if they have Alzheimer’s educational programs.

NIA reminds families to keep up with regular medical checkups as they are important for a person with Alzheimer’s and should include their primary healthcare provider and specialists such as a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and geriatric psychiatrist. Also ask your medical team if there is a memory disorder clinic nearby.

Another suggestion is to plan ahead both financially and for long-term care while the person can still have some valuable input. Finally, experts say to make sure you get the proper help to ensure the person’s wellbeing and safety.

MorningStar Senior Living has 40+ communities operating or under construction throughout the Western U.S. including MorningStar of San Jose which is scheduled to open in June 2023. At MorningStar, we know something about the pain and devastation families go through with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases.  Our Reflections Neighborhood will be staffed by a dedicated, compassionate team and provide a safe, loving home for seniors suffering from dementia.  If you are looking for trusted assisted living or memory care in San Jose, please visit our website for more information.

The Changing Needs of Those with Dementia

August 19, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Dementia Care

As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, a person’s needs change and it is important to recognize and address those changes with appropriate care. Along with meeting basic needs, experts say care providers should treat the whole person by creating an environment that allows them to feel independent and safe. The Alzheimer’s Association says determining the best care options can be tough and offers some advice on how to ensure the person has the services, programs, and caregivers in place for the best possible quality of life.

The first step to any decision regarding care is to honestly evaluate your loved one’s needs. Also, to whatever degree possible, it is recommended you include them in any decisions. Another thing to remember is during the early stages of the disease the person may be able to live independently but in the middle stages, 24-hour supervision is needed. Additionally, around-the-clock care is much more demanding in the later and end stages.

Primary points to consider include safety especially in terms of unsupervised cooking, or if the person has a tenacity to wander or needs help with medications. Does the person have medical conditions that need monitoring such as diabetes or a mobility issue? Other problems that may demand more professional care include a person becoming aggressive or needing help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). Finally, consider if the person would benefit from more social interactions and activities.

If a parent, spouse or another loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the MorningStar at North Ridge team is here to help. As one of the area’s dementia care specialists, MorningStar at North Ridge was designed to provide a secure setting, which allows residents to explore their spacious surroundings freely and easily.  Our specialized care includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the essence of the individual, and to treat residents with the respect and dignity they deserve.    For trusted memory care Albuquerque families can count on, visit our website or contact us for more information.

Learn More About Omega-3 Fatty Acids

August 19, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

While we always hear about omega-3 fatty acids and how they are good for us, just what are they? The experts explain omega-3s are a type of polyunsaturated fat also called “healthy fats.” Research suggests they play a role in protecting us from heart disease and dementia. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) omega-3s are “the primary polyunsaturated fats in brain cell membranes and have been popularized and successfully marketed as dietary supplements.”

DHA, EPA and DPA omega-3 fatty acids are synthesized by marine organisms such as algae and phytoplankton. They are then consumed by fish, aquatic mammals and crustaceans where the acids are stored in body fat, liver and blubber. When we consume foods from the sea such as salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, liver of lean white fish and fish oils, we get the benefits of the omega-3s stored in their bodies.

Another type of omega-3 is ALA derived from plant sources and is the most readily used by the body to create all other types of omega-3 fatty acids. ALAs are found in nuts and seeds like flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts as well as oils like canola and soybean. Experts say although ALA can create all forms of omega-3 fatty acids, “the conversion of ALA to DHA and EPA is poor, so they recommend a dietary intake of a combination of foods rich in ALA, EPA, and DHA.

Along with reducing the risk for heart disease, The Medical News Today (MNT) reports other evidence-based benefits of omega-3s include exerting anti-inflammatory effects throughout the human body, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and improving tolerance to cancer treatments. A study also showed fish oil supplementations protected against major depressive disorders in persons between the ages of 15 to 25.

At MorningStar at Silver Lake, we offer residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting. Our beautiful home has apartments for independent living and assisted living in a selection of floor plans along with a broad range of amenities and services to meet seniors’ needs including a healthy, delicious dining service. Nutrient-Rich Diet is More Important than Ever for Seniors

August 19, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living Facility

As people age, many find their appetites have diminished or they suffer from physical or medical conditions that make eating more difficult.  Therefore, the nutritional value found in the foods they do consume is important, and even today, many seniors have an “inadequate intake of vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, folic acid, calcium, and niacin.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) advise that people over the age of 50 follow the USDA food recommendations, which should help keep older adults feeling more vital, and thus healthier.  They also point out the earlier you start eating a nutrient-rich diet, the more effective it will be later down the road.  Recommendations include a daily diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy.  It also includes eating foods with healthy fats such as olives, nuts, and avocados.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of San Jose, scheduled to open next June, we will offer residents daily meals that are chocked full of the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced when possible.  Our delicious meals will be prepared largely from scratch and take into account seniors’ dietary restrictions.  We will offer a range of choices including low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat that allows our residents to self-manage.  MorningStar’s food service will be overseen by our own Executive Chef, who will welcome resident feedback and tailor menus per their suggestions.

MorningStar of San Jose’s stylish suites come in a range of floor plans and are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  Community amenities include underground parking, a fitness center, bistro, theater, salon, sky terrace, and more. In addition, we will offer a range of wellness programs and activities designed to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. For more information about assisted living facilities, please visit our website.

Have Questions About the New MorningStar of San Jose?

August 17, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

At MorningStar of San Jose we understand that looking at assisted living communities and deciding which one is right for you is a big step for a senior.  This is why we encourage interested families to give us a call to discuss any questions you may have.  In addition, our website is filled with lots of pertinent information regarding amenities, services, enrichment programs and more.  We are scheduled to open in June 2023 and are currently offering exclusive savings to early depositors.

Our website even has a dedicated page for FAQs under our “First Steps” tab.  Here you will find answers to commonly asked questions such as age requirements (in our assisted living and memory care suites, you must be at least 55 years old).  You will also discover important information on how a resident’s level of care is determined and our pricing structure.

FAQs include practical queries such as, yes, we will help you find a physician if you need one whether it is a primary care doctor or a specialty healthcare provider like an occupational therapist or physical therapist. And yes, we do provide transportation to doctor appointments as needed, and our transportation vehicles can accommodate a walker or wheelchair.

You and your family may also want to know about the type of training our staff receives, and we go over that too.   Care Managers complete an orientation program (including a three-day shadow), Radiance culture training, 8-hour dementia training, and ongoing training in specific care needs.  Each of our Medication Managers (QMAPs) is additionally trained in medication administration.

FAQs go over senior housing options such as Companion Living that allows two unrelated adults of the same sex to share a suite, and of course, married couples are welcome!  MorningStar of San Jose will also offer short-term stays based on availability that allows someone to get an idea of whether senior living is right for them.

Activities to Improve Cognitive Abilities

August 15, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

As we grow older, not only do our physical abilities slow down but so do our cognitive abilities. We may find ourselves not able to remember facts the same way we used to or have difficulty thinking about two problems at the same time. Professionals say these changes make it harder for us to stay focused and easier to get distracted. You may not recall new information as you did in the past because you didn’t really learn it.

Changes can start as early as in our 50s and 60s, but experts say to remember that most age-related memory loss and thinking problems are normal and not necessarily a sign of Alzheimer’s disease. They explain it can “simply reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.”  Despite your brain moving a little slower, your judgement is still intact, and you can make sense of what you know and form reasonable arguments. Another thing to consider is even the smallest hearing loss can make processing new information more difficult.

Research shows while our ability to concentrate diminishes, there are things we can do to improve it.  A 2015 study found participants who played brain games 15 minutes, 5 days a week had a big impact on improving their concentration. Another small study in 2018 saw an improvement in seniors’ visual selective attention (VSA), the ability to concentrate on a specific task while ignoring distractions, after playing video games. Recommended cognitive activities include things like crosswords puzzles, Sudoku, chess, jigsaw puzzles and other memory games.

Lose Weight with Healthier, Lower-Calorie Substitutes

August 15, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Experts say it isn’t just our imagination that losing weight gets harder the older we become but is most likely due to having less muscle mass, which burns more calories than fat. To help, they offer easy tips on how to painlessly replace calorie-laden foods with healthier, lower-calorie substitutes. In addition to the fact that nutrient-rich foods appear to help individuals be successful in their quest to lose weight, meals do not necessarily have to be smaller than your average intake.

Dietitians suggest an easy food swap is to drink water flavored with lemon slices or sparkling water rather than sugary sodas. One study found by replacing refined grains with whole grains it “improved blood cholesterol levels and decreased percent of body fat in postmenopausal women.” Replacing sugary granola with heart-healthy oatmeal can also help control your weight. Not only is oatmeal a good source of soluble fiber known to reduce cholesterol but it contains magnesium and potassium known to promote healthy blood pressure. Also dietitians suggest trying sprouted grain breads, which many find tastier and healthier than even whole-grain breads.

Other ways to get healthier and lose weight is to include more plant-based foods into your diet. Make a pledge to have a couple of meatless dinners each week and get your protein from bean burgers, lentils, and quinoa instead of hamburgers and steaks. To get more veggies into your diet, top your bean burger with spinach or lettuce, tomato slices and mushrooms instead of cheese. Rather than pasta, use squash or zucchini noodles.

At MorningStar of Silver Lake senior community, we offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness, and security.  Residents enjoy built-in companionship and numerous perks of community living, including healthy and delicious meals created by our Executive Chef.  Just some of the amenities include a fitness center, bistro, billiards & game room, and theater/chapel.  For trusted independent or assisted living Everette, WA seniors can count on, contact us or visit our website for more information.

Even those with a Sedentary Lifestyle may be Affected by Heat Stroke

August 03, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Memory Care Facility

Doctors warn the elderly as well as those who care for them should be aware of the dangers of heat-related illnesses. They stress that you do not have to be a marathon runner to suffer from heat stroke. People young and old are at risk for serious complications from heat-related illness. In 2015, the latest year for which such statistics are available, the CDC reports heat stroke claimed 335 lives in the United States.

Experts explain there are two kind of heat stroke: “exertional, which is associated with vigorous physical activity, and non-exertional.” The elderly or people with chronic health conditions or suffering from obesity are more susceptible to non-exertional heat stroke. The same goes for individuals on blood pressure lowering drugs like beta blockers and diuretics; or taking clozapine, a drug used to treat psychiatric disorders. Drinking alcohol can cause dehydration and also put you at a higher risk for heat-related illness.

Signs of heat-related illness include fainting, behavior changes, high body temperature (over 104° F), dry skin, a strong and rapid pulse and a slow and weak pulse. The person may no longer be sweating even though it is hot.

To lessen your risk for heat-related illness, doctors recommend avoiding being outside during the hottest part of the day, staying hydrated and drinking lots of water even if you do not feel thirsty. The National Institute of Health says during a heat wave, if you do not have air conditioning, take a cool shower and wear loose fitting clothes. If you need, take an air conditioning break by going to a mall or an air conditioned community center to cool down.

At MorningStar Memory Care at West Valley, we understand a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease is a sobering reality and want  area families to know we are here to help shoulder some of the burden. Regular Physical Activity Can Reduce the Risk of Falls in Older Adults

August 03, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Retirement Communities

Not only is physical exercise good for our heart and cognitive health but it can help older adults stay steady on their feet. Studies show regular physical activity can reduce the risk of falls in older adults at a high risk of falling by nearly one third.

Experts explain certain kinds of exercise helps increase muscle mass and bone strength as well as improve balance and coordination, fight off osteoporosis, and reduce the risk for fractures and broken bones. Some of the best exercises are known as weight-bearing, which require a person to carry their weight and work against gravity. Examples include walking, dancing, hiking, climbing stairs, jogging and playing tennis or basketball. Doctors say if you can manage it, increasing your pace during aerobics, jogging and power walking make the exercises even more effective at strengthening bone density.

Resistance exercises also work against gravity and help build muscle mass and improve bone strength. Strength training with weights, weight machines or resistance bands are all examples of exercises that rely on muscle contractions that tug on bones to stimulate them to bulk up. Along the same line, impact exercises such as jumping jacks and walking or running uphill have been shown to improve bone density fairly quickly.

Healthcare providers say to be sure to check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program, especially if you're taking medications that slow your coordination or throw off your balance. According to the Surgeon General, your optimal goal should be at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days, preferably daily.

Are You Angry with a Loved One for Dying?

August 01, 2022 by MorningStar Living

After the death of a spouse, parent or another loved one, people are often surprised to find themselves feeling angry with the person. Experts say you need to understand anger is one stage of the grieving process and is in response to the painful emotions brought on by the loss. While grief is something all of us will experience at one time or another, remember we can only feel grief if we have had the privilege to feel love.

The various stages of grief can include shock, anger, disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness. Grief can adversely impact our physical and mental health and may interfere with many aspects of our life including sleeping and eating. Another thing experts say is to keep in mind grief is a personal experience and everyone goes through it in their own way and in their own time.

If you are a person whose grief has become overwhelming, it may help to share your feelings with a grief support group or to talk to a professional grief counselor. Myths surrounding grief include you must stay strong, or you need to ignore it, and it will go away. Professionals say for real healing, people need to face their grief. Another myth regards the timeline. Many people think the grieving process should take a year, but for many it may take longer. Moreover it is important to remember accepting the loss does not mean the person is forgotten.

To grieve, acknowledge your pain and accept the fact you can feel a range of emotions including anger at the situation or at the person for “deserting you.” Treat yourself with love and support, and see your doctor if you continue to have a hard time.

If a family member suffers from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, we invite you to take a look at West San Jose’s newest memory care facility, MorningStar at West Valley. We strive to provide compassionate, holistic memory care that is guided by our signature program, Lavender Sky, MorningStar’s philosophy and programming in Memory Care. August is National Eye Exam Month

August 01, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Senior Housing

Optometrists and ophthalmologists explain practicing good eye care includes regular eye exams. The current recommendation for those between 40 to 65 years of age is an exam every 2 to 4 years. For adults over 65, the recommendation is every 1 to 2 years and should include a check for eye diseases and conditions such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

During a dilated eye exam, an ophthalmologist will check pupil reaction, eye pressure, retina, optic nerve, side/peripheral vision, eye movement, muscle balance and coordination. They will also check your focusing ability and eyeglass prescription. The doctor will ask about your medical history including if you or a family member has diabetes, as diabetics have a higher risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma as well as diabetic retinopathy. In addition, they will want to know if you have high blood pressure as over time it can cause damage to the blood vessels around the eyes. Shingles is another disease that can cause inflammation around the eyes, swelling of the eyelids and pain.

August is National Eye Exam month and is a good time for an exam check as Americans are exposed to the greatest amount of UV ray exposure during the summer months, which can increase the risk for cataracts, growths, and cancer. Ophthalmologists say while our eyes need exposure to natural light to maintain our sleep cycles, it is important to wear sunglasses with UV-blockers and hats as protection against the sun.

Tips for Safely taking Prescription Drugs

August 01, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Every year seniors are hospitalized due to prescribed medications. Statistics show drug-related problems are common in older adults and include drug ineffectiveness, adverse drug effects, over-dosage, under-dosage, inappropriate treatment, inadequate monitoring, nonadherence, and drug interactions. It is important to remember even though medication is prescribed by your healthcare provider, problems can occur.

Experts say you must follow directions and take medications as prescribed including on time, in the right dosage, with or without food, and never grinding it into a powder (unless directed by the doctor). They recommend carrying an updated list of all medications and sharing it with your doctors. Additionally, be aware of common interactions between prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications and alcoholic drinks.

Before your doctor prescribes a new medication, ask them why you are taking it, for how long and what are the potential side effects. It is important to know what to look for and to discuss the benefits versus any negative or dangerous consequences. You will want to know things like will a drug make you drowsy so you know not to drive under its influence.

Another thing to safeguard your health is to review your medications with your doctor on a regular basis asking questions such as: do you still need to take it, is the dosage correct, and is there a non-drug alternative? Despite your faith in your medical team, it is not a bad idea to check your medications against the American Geriatric Society’s “2019 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.” The online site lists medications that may be inappropriate or dangerous for seniors.
