Tips to Help Prevent Food Poisoning

October 26, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Unfortunately most of us will suffer from an attack of food poisoning at least once in our life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports approximately one in six Americans will come down with food poisoning this year alone. While uncomfortable, most cases are mild but experts say there are some strains or infections that can be deadly. Symptoms typically include abdominal pain and cramps, nausea, vomiting, frequent diarrhea and fever.

Food poisoning is caused by bacterial or viral contamination of food and experts say the majority of food poisoning cases could have been prevented. Prevention includes following a few key safety rules in how we buy, store and eat food.

When grocery shopping, it is recommended you bag items such as meat, poultry and fish together. Produce should be bagged separately. If you are out running errands, make the grocery store your last stop, and if it is hot outside, bring along a cooler bag to keep refrigerated and frozen foods as cold as possible.

Storage tips include not washing produce until you are ready to use it as it will stay fresher. Before you wash produce, wash your hands with soap and water. Clean produce by running cool water over it for up to 10 seconds. Some food like cucumbers and potatoes should be scrubbed with a brush and then rinsed in cool water. Other foods with hard peels should be scrubbed before the cut opens.

Meat should not be washed but cooked to the proper temperature.Check with your cookbook or the Internet and use a thermometer to ensure it is cooked through. You should store meats away from vegetables and fruits even in the refrigerator.

Other tips to help prevent food poisoning is to wash your hands before preparing food, clean your prep surfaces, and use a separate cutting board for meats that can be sanitized in the dishwasher. Also the general rule is to refrigerate leftovers two hours after you take them out of the refrigerator. Throw away food left out for more than four hours.

Do You Need to be Readmitted to the Hospital? Know the Signs

October 14, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

According to statistics, the percent of patients readmitted to the hospital in the US within 30 days after being discharged was 14 percent in 2015. Common causes of readmission include pneumonia, heart failure/cardiovascular disease, and COPD/pulmonary disease.

The warning signs it is time to go back to the hospital are difficulty breathing, chest pains, spiking fever, extreme nausea or vomiting, confusion or disorientation, worsening fatigue or weakness, or severe pain that cannot be relieved. For surgical patients, you should be told what constitutes a normal recovery and the complications to watch out for that may require a return to the hospital. Dr. Catherine MacLean, chief value medical officer at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, says patients should have a pretty low threshold as to when it is time to reach out to healthcare providers regarding problems.

At discharge, patients are often given new prescriptions to fill, along with other instructions such as hydration, physical therapy and diet recommendations; and patients must be vigilant following these orders. If a person doesn’t respond to these treatments or medications as hoped, they may need to be readmitted to the hospital.

It should not be surprising that the elderly are among the group more often readmitted to the hospital. Miscommunication regarding discharge orders is another common reason. One example is the person goes into the hospital taking certain medications and goes home with new prescriptions. Problems can occur if the patient takes both the old medications and the new ones when the doctor’s intention was to only take the new meds. This is why it is important to communicate with your team before your discharge and be clear on your care.

The new MorningStar at Observatory Park assisted living and memory care community is designed to allow residents to live life as independently as possible. We offer 60 assisted living suites and 23 suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood. While new to the DU neighborhood, MorningStar has dozens of retirement communities around the Western US including several around Denver. Common Causes of Fall Allergies

September 16, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Anyone who suffers from seasonal allergies knows what a nuisance they can be, and just like spring allergy triggers, fall has its own challenges. Symptoms typically include itchy eyes, a runny nose, or a scratchy throat; and throughout most of the country, people experience seasonal allergies.

One of the major causes of fall allergies is ragweed pollen, also known as hay fever. It is found in every state, including being introduced to Hawaii, except Alaska. While common ragweeds only live for one season, each plant can produce up to one billion pollen grains. Experts say ragweed allergy season can start in some northern states as early as late July, and while it typically peaks in mid-to-late September, it can last into late November in more moderate climates. The pollen is more prevalent in the morning so if you are allergic, plan outdoor activities in the mid-afternoon to early evening.

Mold is another common allergy problem during fall. Mold spores can be released when humidity is high as well as when it is dry and windy. Experts say to kill mold spores, use cleaning products designed for that purpose. Likely places to grow mold include around the base of your house, in the bathroom or basement. Use dehumidifiers in areas prone to dampness inside your house.

If you are susceptible to fall allergies, avoid mowing the lawn or raking up dead leaves and plants in the garden as it can stir up mold spores or pollen. Doctors recommend seeing your healthcare provider if symptoms become unmanageable especially if over-the-counter remedies such as antihistamines, decongestants and nasal sprays fail to bring relief.  Other tips to reduce pollens and mold spores include wearing a KN-95 face mask outside during high allergy alerts, using a HEPA filter air purifier and vacuuming frequently with a HEPA filter.

Maintain and Enhance Your Memory with Healthy Habits

September 14, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Studies suggest while some memory decline is inevitable with aging, there are lifestyle habits we can adopt to help maintain and enhance memory function as well as our overall brain health. The US News & World Report says one of the things we can do is to routinely be physically active as studies show it provides a lower risk of mental decline and Alzheimer's disease.

They explain physical activity optimizes blood flow to the entire body including the brain and helps keep our memories sharp. However, the type of physical exercise is important and should include a minimum of 30 minutes a day of cardio such as power walking, running, biking or swimming. (Before beginning any new exercise, experts say check with your healthcare provider.)

If you worry about forgetting things, Dr. Vernon Williams, a sports neurologist and founding director of the Center for Sports Neurology and Pain Medicine at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, says for most of us it is normal. He states all of us forget things like where we put our keys or when our doctor appointment is, which is typically not a reason for concern. Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia are different and cause more consistent memory problems that have a debilitating effect on a person's quality of life.

Along with physical exercise, other strategies to improve and protect memory include challenging our brain by learning new things, sleeping well and eating a healthy diet. Dr. Williams says adults need at least seven to nine hours of sleep a night as it “allows the brain to heal and restore itself, clearing toxins that can lead to Alzheimer's disease and other kinds of dementia.”

MorningStar at Silver Lake has spacious independent and assisted living apartments in a choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. Our luxury amenities ensure carefree retirement years with plenty of ways to exercise both the body and the brain.  Amenities include a computer lounge, fitness center, life enrichment room, resident garden beds, strolling paths, wellness programs and activities. The Many Ways Socializing Improves Seniors’ Health

September 12, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

A UCSF Division of Geriatrics study found 43 percent of seniors report regularly experiencing loneliness. Mayo clinic psychologist, Dr. Craig Sawchuk, Ph.D., explains why this can be a problem. He says as “social animals by nature; we tend to function better when we’re in a community setting and being around others.”

Several studies report a link between social isolation and an increased risk of disease including one from the Academy of Science, which found loneliness can lead to higher rates of poor physical and mental health. Health concerns for isolated adults include hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac failure, depression, anxiety and Alzheimer’s disease.

It becomes harder for seniors who live alone to socialize as they get into their upper 70s or 80s as many stop driving and/or suffer from chronic health problems affecting their mobility. Other contributing issues to loneliness in the elderly may include the death of a spouse or close family members and friends.

To emphasize how important socialization is for older adults, the American Public Health Association explains the most effective way for seniors to improve their health is to increase socialization. They report “socialization improves mood, cognition, memory recall, and is associated with healthy behaviors, including exercise.”

For built-in companionship, senior care services, luxury amenities, and signature wellness programs and activities, we recommend taking a look at San Jose’s newest senior living community, MorningStar of San Jose. Our community offers 69 assisted living suites in various floor plans as well as holistic memory care for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood.

While we are a brand new community, we are not new to senior living as our parent company; MorningStar Senior Living has dozens of communities across the Western US. Please contact us to learn more about availability at the finest assisted living and memory care San Jose offers and ask about exclusive savings for early depositors with our Move-in Specials. We open to residents in the spring of 2023 and look forward to welcoming you to our loving MorningStar family.

Moving Forward After a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

August 22, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

When a person is told they have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, it is extremely difficult not only for the individual but the entire family. As it generally comes after the person as well as their family and friends have noticed a marked change in the individual, it is tough to hear but not always a huge surprise. Now the question becomes “what next?”

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) offers families guidance with a list of helpful informative and supportive resources including the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Check if they have local chapters where you can get in-person support, meet others in your same situation, and get involved in fundraising activities. You can additionally reach out to local community centers and hospitals to find out if they have Alzheimer’s educational programs.

NIA reminds families to keep up with regular medical checkups as they are important for a person with Alzheimer’s and should include their primary healthcare provider and specialists such as a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and geriatric psychiatrist. Also ask your medical team if there is a memory disorder clinic nearby.

Another suggestion is to plan ahead both financially and for long-term care while the person can still have some valuable input. Finally, experts say to make sure you get the proper help to ensure the person’s wellbeing and safety.

MorningStar Senior Living has 40+ communities operating or under construction throughout the Western U.S. including MorningStar of San Jose which is scheduled to open in June 2023. At MorningStar, we know something about the pain and devastation families go through with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases.  Our Reflections Neighborhood will be staffed by a dedicated, compassionate team and provide a safe, loving home for seniors suffering from dementia.  If you are looking for trusted assisted living or memory care in San Jose, please visit our website for more information.

At MorningStar of San Jose, our mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Lose Weight with Healthier, Lower-Calorie Substitutes

August 15, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Experts say it isn’t just our imagination that losing weight gets harder the older we become but is most likely due to having less muscle mass, which burns more calories than fat. To help, they offer easy tips on how to painlessly replace calorie-laden foods with healthier, lower-calorie substitutes. In addition to the fact that nutrient-rich foods appear to help individuals be successful in their quest to lose weight, meals do not necessarily have to be smaller than your average intake.

Dietitians suggest an easy food swap is to drink water flavored with lemon slices or sparkling water rather than sugary sodas. One study found by replacing refined grains with whole grains it “improved blood cholesterol levels and decreased percent of body fat in postmenopausal women.” Replacing sugary granola with heart-healthy oatmeal can also help control your weight. Not only is oatmeal a good source of soluble fiber known to reduce cholesterol but it contains magnesium and potassium known to promote healthy blood pressure. Also dietitians suggest trying sprouted grain breads, which many find tastier and healthier than even whole-grain breads.

Other ways to get healthier and lose weight is to include more plant-based foods into your diet. Make a pledge to have a couple of meatless dinners each week and get your protein from bean burgers, lentils, and quinoa instead of hamburgers and steaks. To get more veggies into your diet, top your bean burger with spinach or lettuce, tomato slices and mushrooms instead of cheese. Rather than pasta, use squash or zucchini noodles.

At MorningStar of Silver Lake senior community, we offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness, and security.  Residents enjoy built-in companionship and numerous perks of community living, including healthy and delicious meals created by our Executive Chef.  Just some of the amenities include a fitness center, bistro, billiards & game room, and theater/chapel.  For trusted independent or assisted living Everette, WA seniors can count on, contact us or visit our website for more information.

Tips for Safely taking Prescription Drugs

August 01, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Every year seniors are hospitalized due to prescribed medications. Statistics show drug-related problems are common in older adults and include drug ineffectiveness, adverse drug effects, over-dosage, under-dosage, inappropriate treatment, inadequate monitoring, nonadherence, and drug interactions. It is important to remember even though medication is prescribed by your healthcare provider, problems can occur.

Experts say you must follow directions and take medications as prescribed including on time, in the right dosage, with or without food, and never grinding it into a powder (unless directed by the doctor). They recommend carrying an updated list of all medications and sharing it with your doctors. Additionally, be aware of common interactions between prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications and alcoholic drinks.

Before your doctor prescribes a new medication, ask them why you are taking it, for how long and what are the potential side effects. It is important to know what to look for and to discuss the benefits versus any negative or dangerous consequences. You will want to know things like will a drug make you drowsy so you know not to drive under its influence.

Another thing to safeguard your health is to review your medications with your doctor on a regular basis asking questions such as: do you still need to take it, is the dosage correct, and is there a non-drug alternative? Despite your faith in your medical team, it is not a bad idea to check your medications against the American Geriatric Society’s “2019 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.” The online site lists medications that may be inappropriate or dangerous for seniors.

MorningStar at Observatory Park assisted living and memory care community enables residents to live life as independently as possible. We offer 60 assisted living suites from studio to one- and two-bedroom floorplans and 23 suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood. To reserve your select suite today, visit our website for contact information and to ask about our Move-in Specials. We open to residents in the last quarter of 2022.

Loneliness is Linked to Poor Health

July 29, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), statistics show seniors who report feelings of loneliness are at higher risk for several diseases including dementia and are more likely to experience premature death. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) says “one-third of adults aged 45 and older feel lonely, and nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.” Social isolation is a lack of social connections and a result of a person living alone, having a spouse and/or other supportive friends or relatives die, or suffering from chronic illness. Other related problems include a lack of transportation, mobility impairment and untreated hearing loss, which all limit the senior’s opportunity to engage with others.

AARP Research surveyed adults 45 and older regarding their feelings of loneliness. Of those respondents who rated their health as excellent, only 25 percent said they were lonely. Among participants who said their health was poor, 55 percent reported feeling lonely. The CDC also says studies find social isolation or loneliness is linked to a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke as well as a 50% percent increased risk of dementia.

If you are looking for exceptional senior housing, Everett WA’s MorningStar at Silver Lake may be your answer. We provide everything seniors need to safely and comfortably age in place. Senior Living Communities Offer Many Benefits

July 25, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

As it turns out, many seniors are quite happy with their decision to move into an independent senior living or assisted living community.  In part, that may be since many of today’s senior communities are loaded with numerous amenities and activities.   As a resident, you are provided with a lifestyle of comfort and community as well as a sense of safety and security.  Here are some of the many benefits:

  • When seniors move out of their family home into a senior community, they find themselves freed from lots of responsibilities.  Owning a home requires routine care and maintenance such as mowing lawns and other housekeeping chores.

  • Seniors often live alone and experience feelings of loneliness and isolation.  Also, as people age, many are reluctant to drive, which means they end up spending a lot of time at home by themselves.  This is something that is not a problem in senior communities.  While activities are optional, there is generally something of interest for everyone.

  • For seniors who do not drive anymore, senior communities usually offer some form of transportation.  In addition, many routinely schedule day trips to activities such as plays, museums, shopping or other events.

  • We also know that many seniors who live alone do not eat well.  In some cases, grocery shopping and preparing food has become difficult.  Many senior communities make healthy, nutritious food a priority and offer choices such as low sodium, no sugar added etc.

  • As an assisted living resident, you will receive help with activities of daily living (ADLs) to provide a better quality of life. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services senior communities provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

  • Finally, we cannot forget the importance of socializing and making new friends at any age.  Even for individuals who value their privacy, there is still the comfort of having other people around.  If the event of a fall or medical emergency, help is always close at hand.

At MorningStar at Silver Lake, we provide all this and more. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day dining, bistro, libraries, fitness center, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle for residents. Please visit our website to learn more about the finest independent and assisted living Everett, WA has to offer.

Research Discoveries Offer Optimism and Hope for Alzheimer’s Patients

July 25, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Recently John C. Morris, MD, Director of the Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center at Washington University in St. Louis and member of the ABF research advisory committee, said there are several reasons to have hope and optimism for the future regarding Alzheimer’s disease. Involved in Alzheimer’s research since 1983, he explained for the first time he believes “there is now a great opportunity to develop effective therapies, including drugs currently under evaluation for treatment.” He said advances also include an important tool for diagnosing the disease.

One of the reasons for optimism was the announcement of the pharmaceutical company Biogen’s controversial new drug, which purportedly is designed to treat Alzheimer’s disease and not just the symptoms. The drug, aducanumab, was approved for patient use on June 7, 2021. However, doctors say it is important to know the FDA’s approval is only for the drug’s ability to reduce the amount of amyloid plaques in the brains of people given the drug. They state it is still unknown whether the removal of the plaque offers benefits to the patients. To be eligible to receive the drug, patients need to have a firm diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

In the year 2020, we also heard the news about a ground-breaking new blood test at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2020. Researchers say the new test identifies the protein ptau-2017, a biomarker for Alzheimer’s, and results have been far more accurate than several other biomarkers currently being tested. This is good news as doctors say earlier testing will lead to earlier interventions. The test received a Breakthrough Device designation by the FDA in October 2021.

Along with assisted living, the new MorningStar of San Jose will offer 34 suites devoted to the compassionate, loving care of those with memory impairment.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is tailored to serve the needs of our most tender residents.  Our job is to elevate and celebrate life by trying to connect with and nurture the individual each day, and to ensure they are treated with the utmost respect and dignity they deserve.  For more information about trusted memory care at MorningStar, please contact us or visit our website.

Should You Sell a Parent’s Home before They Move to Assisted Living?

July 22, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

We all know moving has its challenges but it can be especially difficult when it is prudent for an elderly person to change their living situation. Many times a move to assisted living is triggered by an emergency medical event such as an injury due to a fall or a substantial decline in the person’s health. The senior may not only feel threatened by the change in their health and lifestyle but leaving a home they may have lived in for decades.

Often families are faced with a decision of whether to sell the home before the parent moves or to wait until after they have left and are settled into their new community. Since a person’s home is typically their biggest asset, one thing to consider is if they will need the proceeds from the sale to help finance their home?

However experts caution selling an occupied house can be tricky as you want potential buyers to view the home in the best light. It should be free of clutter and personal belongings, which makes keeping it ready for unexpected showings difficult.

Selling a home without an occupant allows you to have it showcase ready at all times. If need be, hire a company to come in and stage it. Most importantly, it is a lot easier on mom or dad to not have the added stress of strangers coming in and looking at their beloved home with a critical eye. If proceeds from the home are needed to fund their move, many experts recommend taking out a bridge loan on the money expected from the sale.

Satisfying, Healthy Snacks

July 22, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

The goal of a snack should be to satisfy your hunger as well as be a balanced addition to your daily nutritional intake. Dietician Lisa Jones says satisfying snacks can be crunchy, creamy, savory or salty and good choices include things like eggs, tofu, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables.

As a guideline, an adult’s snack should contain approximately 150 to 250 calories. Experts advise diabetics to stick to protein-rich choices and to watch the amount of carbohydrates a food contains as carbs can elevate blood sugar. If you are eating a pre-packaged food, check to see what constitutes a serving and the number of calories.

Remember healthy snacks can be tasty such as avocado on whole grain toast. For a fiber-rich snack, how about making chia pudding? The recipe is simple and all you need to do is add 3 tablespoons of chia seeds to a 6 oz. glass of seed-based milk. Add ½ cup fruit and refrigerate for a couple of hours. To get 80% of the daily folate and 50% of the manganese requirement, how about eating a cup of shelled edamame?

Other quick snacks include a handful of nuts and a piece of fruit, or a bowl of popcorn topped with a small amount of olive oil rather than butter. Cut-up veggies eaten plain or dipped in peanut butter or humus is another satisfying, healthy snack. Greek yogurt is loaded with calcium, probiotics and protein and can be added to fruit, a handful of nuts or even to tuna.

Help Lower Your Blood Pressure with Lifestyle Changes

July 01, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

According to the CDC, in 2017 the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association published new guidelines for hypertension management defining high hypertension as blood pressure at or above 130/80 mmHg. Stage 2 hypertension was defined as a blood pressure at or above 140/90 mmHg. Nearly half of all adults in the US have hypertension or are taking medication to lower their numbers. Hypertension puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke, which are the leading causes of death in the US.

If you have been told you have HBP, the Mayo Clinic recommends several lifestyle changes to help lower your numbers and to keep them down. They say if you are overweight you lose weight as blood pressure often increases as your weight goes up. Moreover, being overweight can result in sleep apnea that often raises BP. Even your waistline can put you at risk. Typically a waistline of more than 40" for men and 35” for women can be problematic but consult your doctor as there are some variations among ethnic groups.

Regular exercise is another component to lowering and maintaining blood pressure. Experts recommend 150 minutes a week or 30 minutes on most days as studies show this amount of physical activity can lower BP by about 5 to 8 mm Hg.

A healthy diet also plays a role in maintaining a healthy BP. Dieticians say read labels, eat plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. Avoid foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol; and reduce sodium by eating less processed foods and reading food labels. Also don’t add salt to your food. Talk to your doctor about other guidelines for lowering HPB.

Let us introduce you to MorningStar of San Jose, a new assisted living and memory care community currently under construction and due to open in June 2023. Downsizing Can Be the Start of a New Adventure

June 23, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Instead of feeling sad about moving from a home that perhaps is too large or costly for you to care for, think about moving into a smaller apartment or condo as the start of a new adventure.   However, to do it right, you should be organized.  Experts suggest you only take with you the things that bring joy and find ways to get rid of the rest.  If that piece of advice still finds you with way too much stuff, then take a moment to picture how you want your new life to look.  Is it a sleek, minimalist décor or more like a smaller, compact version of your present home?

Some simple solutions to help you decorate your new apartment include bringing with you or buying multi-purpose furniture.  This could include upholstered storage benches or cubes, nesting coffee tables, extension desks, and sized-down sofa and chairs more suited to a compact footprint.  Attractive baskets and storage carts also help to make a small place feel more organized.

If you want to use some of your current furniture, measure it, and then draw up a floor plan of the new place and lay it all out to see how it will fit.  In addition, since your new place is smaller, it will most likely not have as many closets as your old home so go through your clothing and only take the items you truly enjoy wearing.  Give the rest to charity.  Lastly, consider the amenities at your new place.  For example if they have an onsite fitness room, you probably do not need to bring along your own in-home treadmill or stationary bike.

At MorningStar at Silver Lake, our beautiful senior living community offers stylish suites that are ready to move into and just require your furnishings and personal items.  Apartments come in a range of configurations including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans.  Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, billiards & game room, fitness center, gardens, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  For independent living or assisted living Everett seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, the perfect community to comfortably and safely age in place.

“Mindfulness” Helps You Attain a Life Well-lived

June 13, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

If you find yourself constantly checking emails, texts or other social media content you may be setting yourself up for anxiety, envy, discontentment or even depression. We can become drained when we spend too much time planning and multi-tasking, daydreaming and/or practicing negative thinking.

Experts say there are steps we can take to lower your stress level and be more resilient in the face of adversity. A life well-lived is a blend of gratitude, optimism, practical wisdom and remaining open to accepting and facing up to what life has in store for us, good or bad. The old adage to “count your blessings'' is part of the lifelong process of learning to be happier and more content.

The Mayo Clinic says the practice of mindfulness is one way to help relax the body and mind and reduce stress. They explain it is a type of meditation in which you “focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment.” The practice can be done using breathing methods, guided imagery, concentration, walking mediations and more.

One example is to slow down and try to experience your surroundings with all your senses. Practice living in the moment; and remember to treat and accept yourself as you would a good friend. Experts suggest committing to doing mindfulness exercises for a period of time such as six months to see if it helps.

Meet MorningStar’s newest assisted living and memory care community in the historic DU neighborhood in South Denver. Stay Healthy During Your Senior Years by Exercising 30 Minutes a Day

June 01, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

Exercise is important for people of all ages, but it is especially important for seniors. As we age, our bodies become more susceptible to disease, and it takes a bit more effort to keep health ailments at bay.

Exercising for 30 minutes each day is a habit that every senior should adopt, whether they live at home or in an independent living community. Even moderate exercise helps with both physical and mental health and can make senior living more enjoyable.

Benefits of Exercising 30 Minutes a Day

Maintaining good physical health can be simple by adopting small habits each day. Whether you live alone or in an assisted living community, incorporating exercise into your life does not have to take up a lot of time or require a lot of investment.

Simply lifting light weights, walking, swimming, or engaging in another aerobic activity for 30 minutes can do wonders for your health.

Improve Strength

Seniors naturally lose strength in their bones and muscles over time. Without regular exercise, ligaments and joints can become weak too. Seniors who do not make time to exercise are at greater risk of injury, even from regular daily activities.

Exercising for 30 minutes a day prevents the body from weakening and is the best line of defense against preventable injuries.

Maintain Balance

Falls are one of the top reasons for senior hospitalization. More often than not, falls are not caused by tripping over objects but by a lack of balance. Seniors who do not exercise may find themselves more wobbly and more prone to falls when walking or standing.

Exercise not only strengthens muscles, which helps with balance, but it improves reaction time and flexibility, making a fall less likely to occur.

Boosts Mood

One of the greatest benefits of exercising for 30 minutes a day is the impact it has on mood and mental health. Exercising has been proven to release endorphins, which contribute to improved mood, greater motivation, and a decreased risk of developing depression. Health is a holistic effort, and exercise benefits your mind just as much as your body.

Improve Energy Levels

If you’ve ever felt a lack of motivation or energy needed to get through your day, it could be due to a lack of exercise.

Daily exercise certainly expends energy, so it can seem counterintuitive that it would boost your energy levels. However, seniors who exercise for 30 minutes a day generally experience high energy levels and greater motivation.

Keeping Your Brain Fit

May 27, 2022 by MorningStar Living in Assisted Living

More and more research supports the importance of seniors staying physical fit as well as keeping their brains’ fit.  Harvard Health Publishing reports on research with mice and humans that show “brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological ‘plasticity’ and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss.”

Mentally stimulating activities such as trivia and memory games, puzzles, crosswords, board and card games can help maintain brain function.  Even if you don’t have a partner to play with, many of these types of games can be found on a computer or tablet.   Reading, taking courses, drawing, painting and experimenting with things that require manual dexterity are stimulating mental gymnastics.  Other great brain boosters include learning or engaging in creative activities like playing an instrument or dancing.

Board games, such as chess and checkers, require counting, strategy and decision-making. Memory games, scrabble and crosswords can help to improve recall and reduce those times when you cannot get the right word out.  Another added benefit to playing games with others is companionship.

Experts say physical activity is also necessary for good brain health as it increases the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the region of the brain responsible for thought.  It encourages the development of “new nerve cells and increases the connections between brain cells (synapses).”   Another positive side effect of exercise is it also improves your heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure, improving blood sugar balance and reducing mental stress.  Brain health is also improved with good nutrition.   Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils (olive oil) and plant sources of proteins may help to prevent cognitive impairment and dementia.
