Take Extra Precautions over the Holidays with Elderly Loved Ones

December 15, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Healthcare experts stress the importance of taking precautions over the holidays when spending time with older adults with underlying health conditions including family members with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. If you plan to have them attend family celebrations, it is recommended you limit guests to those who are vaccinated or ask unvaccinated family members to be isolated 14 days before they join the group and to get a COVID test. If that is not possible, then use social media to connect with one another. Also doctors say along with COVID-19 vaccines, the flu shot is an important step to protecting vulnerable family members.

If you do gather with people outside your immediate family, suggestions include taking the festivities outside if practical and adjust expectations in terms of crowd size. If the person with Alzheimer’s suffers from sundowning (experiencing more confusion in the evening), move the celebration to earlier in the day and shorten the event or the time the person will be there. Have hand sanitizer available and ask people to avoid hugs, handshakes, and close contact. Wear masks when not eating or drinking.

Other ways to celebrate the holidays with someone with Alzheimer’s is to take a walk outside to look at holiday lights or get out the glue stick and create homemade decorations. Most of all listen to the clues the person is giving out, and if they need some quiet time, make sure they get it.

MorningStar of North Ridge is a memory care community dedicated to providing seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related diseases compassionate care from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. Combat Loneliness and Isolation with Community Living

December 13, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living, memory care

The U.S. Census Bureau reports almost 13.8 million seniors live alone. We know various causes including chronic and worsening health conditions, hearing loss, no longer driving, mobility issues, loss of a spouse or other loved ones can result in loneliness and isolation for older adults on their own.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Social isolation and loneliness in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States, and puts them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions.” They cite statistics showing social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death, and rivals those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Moreover, studies find social isolation is associated with approximately a 50% increased risk of dementia, a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke. The CDC also warns loneliness is linked to higher risk of depression, suicide and anxiety.

Independent living communities offer older adults a built-in community of people at a similar stage of life as well as a variety of social activities that appeal to many tastes and preferences. The range of amenities and activities make it easy for residents to interact with others and to forge new friendships. Another advantage to 55+ independent living communities is the entire place is designed to accommodate the needs of seniors. This includes apartments with wheelchair accessible doorways, low thresholds, well-lit spaces, handrails, walk-in showers and tubs in bathrooms, and emergency call systems.

At MorningStar at Silver Lake, we provide all the comforts of home with stylish apartments and graciously-appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day restaurant-style dining, bistro, outdoor patio garden, fitness center, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle for senior residents. Therapy Dolls for Alzheimer’s Patients

December 10, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Along with many non-drug interventions such as art, music, animals and gardening, doll therapy is another way to soothe and calm people who suffer from Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss. While some people find it controversial and believe giving toys to adults is demeaning, Dr. Gary Mitchell, PhD, a lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland and the author of the 2016 book Doll Therapy in Dementia Care: Evidence and Practice, respectively disagrees.

He explains living with Alzheimer’s is like being lost in a sea of confusion and uncertainty. “You don’t really know people anymore. You don’t really know the days of the week; but when you have that doll with you, over a period of time it can almost be your anchor. That’s the thing you’re responsible for, the thing you remember. And it brings a sense of comfort and attachment.”

Additionally a 2018 study published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry suggests doll therapy significantly reduced the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia as well as caregiver distress. Experts offer a few tips for families or caregivers who are considering getting a therapy doll. They say to casually introduce the doll and to let the person decide if they like it. If they appear disinterested, don’t force the issue but rather try again in a few weeks. While you will want to buy a life-like doll, don’t get one that cries.

At MorningStar of North Ridge, we specialize in providing individualized memory care for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases. Our community has 38 suites with studio and one-bedroom floor plans and is equipped to care for residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. The Benefits Exercise Offers to Cognitive Health

December 08, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

We know exercise contributes to a person’s overall health and results in stronger muscles, a healthier heart and even a better night’s sleep. Now a neuroscientist is speaking up about the benefits exercise offers to our cognitive health. Wendy Suzuki, PhD, a neuroscientist and professor of Neural Science and Psychology in the Center for Neural Science at New York University, explains, “I’ve found that exercising is one of the most transformative things you can do to improve cognitive abilities, such as learning, thinking, memory, focus and reasoning — all of which can help you become smarter and live longer.”

Suzuki says each time we move our bodies’ beneficial neurotransmitters are released into the brain including dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin and acetylcholine, which transmits signals from nerve cells to target cells. These target cells may be in muscles, glands, or other nerves and can affect our sleep cycles, moods and concentration including a decrease in feelings of depression and anxiety. Research has shown it only takes as little as 10 to 30 minutes of exercise per day to elevate mood.

Another important study shows how exercise promotes neurogenesis (the birth of new brain cells) and improves the brain’s function. The longitudinal study out of Sweden spans 44-years, and reports “women who scored high on a fitness test in midlife were nearly 90 percent less likely than their moderately fit or unfit peers to develop dementia decades later.” Moreover, researchers say the fittest women held dementia at bay at least 10 years longer than their peers. So the next question is how much exercise do we need to get results? Suzuki says to try for 90 to 120 minutes a week. This can be broken down in daily increments or three to four sessions a week.

For independent and assisted living Everett seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Silver Lake, the perfect home to comfortably and safely age in place.  We offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, including a fitness center and exercise classes to keep you moving.  Please contact us for pricing and availability and be sure to ask about our Move-in Specials.

Researchers Study the Link between Diet & Dementia

December 06, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

The Medical News Today says dementia is one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide. The debilitating disease has no cure; and available treatments only alleviate symptoms without slowing the progression of the disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dementia affects more than 55 million people globally, and 10 million people receive a diagnosis each year. Of that number it is estimated 60 – 70 percent have Alzheimer’s, and 6 million of them are Americans. Unfortunately those numbers are expected to rise to 139 million people across the globe by 2050.

Other rising numbers are in cases of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, which are all believed to increase a person’s risk for dementia. This is why researchers are not only trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and other dementias but ways to reduce people’s risk for the disease.

Dr. Christopher Weber, director of global science initiatives at the Alzheimer’s Association, noted that: “Research looking at the relationship between diet and cognition is well-established. There is strong evidence to suggest that what is good for the heart is good for the head, and we know a healthy diet is good for the heart.”

Researchers say one diet that appears to suggest better cognitive health is the MIND diet, (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay). It is similar to the Mediterranean diet with a heavy focus on green, leafy vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, seafood, poultry and wine.

On the other hand, foods high in refined carbohydrates may cause an increase in the risk for Alzheimer’s. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports on a study linking processed meat products, like sausages, salami, and bacon with a relative increased risk of all dementias by 44% and Alzheimer’s disease by 52%.

MorningStar of North Ridge is a community devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. As part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, founded on the principle “to honor, to serve, to invest,” we have created a true home for residents. The Advantageous of Independent Living Communities

December 02, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Did you know more and more older adults are making the choice to move into senior living communities?  Seniors are embracing the idea of giving up home maintenance and spending more time doing what they love best, including being able to travel without worrying about snow piling up or the lawn needing to be mowed. Independent living communities offer private apartments designed to meet residents’ needs along with common areas ideal for sitting and relaxing with friends and dining rooms offering delicious restaurant-style meals.

Another reason many seniors are choosing independent living communities is the appeal of living among like-minded people of the same age. Socializing is important to our wellbeing and isolation can lead to depression or worsen health problems. For seniors who no longer work and/or have stopped or limited their driving, it can get more and more difficult to maintain normal social interactions. Senior living communities offer easy opportunities for residents to meet new friends or engage in social activities and special events.

At senior living communities such as MorningStar at Silver Lake, we offer transportation services and also take to the road every so often for trips to local parks, shopping malls, museums and other spots of interest. We also bring in live entertainment and host special events throughout the year. Wellness activities include exercise classes, life enrichment classes and more. We also know security is important to peace of mind, and community living gives that to seniors and their families.

In addition, if you are someone who requires a little help with their daily personal care, MorningStar offers assisted living delivered by 24/7 care managers, licensed nurses and medication managers.  MorningStar at Silver Lake is a vibrant 55+ community with luxury amenities and concierge services for a relaxing, stress-free retirement. Please visit our website for more information on the finest senior housing Everett, WA offers.

Research Shows Stereotypes About Old Age are Wrong

November 12, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Many people believe growing older is awful and that everyone in their eighties is sickly and depressed. However, in 86-year-old psychologist Katharine Esty’s fourth book called, EightySomethings: A Practical Guide to Letting Go, Aging Well, and Finding Unexpected Happiness, she strongly dispels this notion. In fact, her research found elderly adults are happier and hold a more positive outlook than most of us thought. Esty explains, “The stereotypes that people have in their minds about old age are just completely wrong.” She adds, the type of activities people in their eighties are doing is stunning and many are pain-free, living full productive lives.

It turns out a lot of octogenarians are still working full- or part-time jobs, or finding fulfillment in doing some sort of volunteer work through their communities or church. Esty says having a purpose in life, regardless of age, gives a person’s life meaning. In addition, most 80-year-olds have already experienced loss and hardships in their life and have developed coping mechanisms to better deal with difficulties.

The majority of octogenarians also reported feeling less anger, worry and stress than they did when they were younger; and while they may have some regrets, most had come to terms with their decisions. Lastly, the contentment 80-year-olds express about their lives is they recognize time is short and should not be wasted.

MorningStar at Silver Lake’s goal is to provide the best independent and assisted living Everett offers, with a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and security. Our community has enrichment programs to stay active and involved in life physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially. Is Mom or Dad’s Memory Loss Normal or Something More Serious?

November 08, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

As we grow older, many of us find ourselves becoming forgetful and worry it could be a sign of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Researchers say it is true that the older we get we are more forgetful as the following reports: “At least half of those over age 65 say that they are more forgetful than they were when they were younger, experiencing ‘senior moments’ about things like where they put things or recalling somebody’s name.”

The question then becomes when what is the difference between “normal” age-related memory loss and Alzheimer’s. Studies find the brain shows warning signs of Alzheimer’s approximately fifteen years before someone experiences symptoms of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and quite a while before the first real signs of dementia start.

Concerning signs of memory loss include not just forgetting an appointment or someone’s name, but repeatedly forgetting it. Another sign that something more serious is going on is if family members start to notice a loved one’s forgetfulness or confusion. Constantly repeating questions, forgetting the word for something or getting lost in a familiar neighborhood are other signs of a bigger problem. Judgement and planning may also be impaired, and tasks the person used to be good at like balancing a checkbook or following a recipe can become frustrating and difficult.

To know for sure what is happening, you need to make an appointment with their doctor. They can do a complete medical work-up including looking at the medications the person is taking, and checking for signs of depression and other environmental issues, which could account for symptoms. If the person is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or a dementia-related disease, there are therapies designed to improve quality of life.

MorningStar of North Ridge feels privileged to provide trusted memory care in Albuquerque, NM. As dementia care specialists, we provide support to our residents and their families with an array of services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. Tips to Ease the Transition to Memory Care

October 29, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

If you are dealing with a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, you most likely understand the challenge of introducing changes into their day-to-day routine. One big change, which can be stressful for all involved, is when a family decides it is time to move a parent or another loved one into a memory care home.

A Place for Mom’s website warns families it can take a while for a loved one to adapt. They encourage the family to take an optimistic view about the move, and help the person focus on the positive aspects of the community, talking up the programs and activities, quality of care, and the social interactions. Moreover, rather than spending time second-guessing your decision, remember you carefully searched for the best memory care community and now you need to trust the experts at home.

A few of the tips to help your parent’s transition is to fix up the suite much like their old home, adding family photos and other favorite mementos. In addition, while you need to give the person time to adapt, this doesn’t mean you cannot add your input regarding their care. During the intake process, the staff will look to the family to provide details regarding the person’s day-to-day routine, their background and likes and dislikes. Visit regularly in person or virtually but don’t get too upset if they tell you they want to go home. Avoid arguing but reassure them they are safe, and offer to take them for a walk, listen to music or something else you know they will enjoy.

At MorningStar of North Ridge, our community is devoted to providing the finest memory care including helping families transition their loved ones into our welcoming home. Every aspect of our community caters to those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia including purposeful activities, trained caregivers, food service, security and more. Visit our website to learn more about our loving home, our team and our company’s approach to Alzheimer’s care.

Are You Considering a Move to a Senior Community?

October 25, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

As more and more seniors watch friends and relatives move into retirement communities, many wonder if it is the right step for them. While obviously a decision of this magnitude should be carefully made, there is data showing the majority of seniors in retirement communities are happy they made the move. In fact, studies further indicate seniors in such communities tend to live longer. One report from the United States General Accounting Office (GAO), states “seniors who choose to live in retirement communities live 1.5 to 2 years longer than seniors who choose to retire in their homes.”

Researchers explain that many communities offer seniors a higher quality of life with their wide range of activities including physical fitness classes, group games and other entertainment opportunities. Also, we all know maintaining a home can be stressful and even more so as we age, while retirement communities provide a virtually carefree lifestyle.

Senior communities seamlessly provide the chance to interact and socialize with like-minded people in the same stage of life, making it easy to meet and connect with people who share your interests. Again, studies find “seniors are 22% more likely to live longer and lead more fulfilling lives if they're given the chance to socialize with others.” Moreover, researchers say active seniors have better immune systems and a lower risk of dementia; and that loneliness can lead to a greater risk of high blood pressure, depression and early mortality.

MorningStar at Silver Lake, an independent and assisted living community, offers all the comforts of home with stylish apartments and graciously-appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, billiards & game room, fitness center, gardens, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Holiday Gift Ideas for a Loved One with Memory Loss

October 21, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

If you want to get something special for mom or dad or another loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or a dementia-related disease, it can be challenging to figure out a good gift. This is where the Internet can lend a hand with a range of items designed to enhance your loved one’s quality of life.

Dementia care specialists say it can take a little more time and some creativity but there are many great gift ideas. One idea is personalized gifts or memory-filled ones. A photo album filled with pictures of the person surrounded by people important to them, or a picture book from a place they loved to visit. A coffee mug personalized with a photo or a cozy throw filled with favorite family pictures are also good ideas.

Music from their younger years, show tunes and old movies are sure to make them smile and can be a good way to spend an afternoon together listening to their new gifts. Coloring books filled with pictures of things they love such as animals or flowers, and a set of new markers or crayons, and easy-to-do crafts are also fun to do together.

Another item targeted to people with Alzheimer’s or dementia is therapy stuffed animals.  Designed to meet their special needs, one example is a teddy bear that comes with a few classic songs but has room to load a person’s favorite tunes (up to a 1,000 songs). Cuddly robotic cat and dog stuffed animals have a calming, soothing effect on people in the middle and later stages of Alzheimer's disease. Research shows they can help the person remember a time in their life when their purpose included caring for others.

The MorningStar of North Ridge community is devoted to comprehensive Alzheimer’s care. We are a part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, which was founded on the principle “to honor, to serve, to invest;” and attribute our success and growth to God’s grace and staying true to a mission of servant-leadership. Methods to Soothe & Comfort Those with Alzheimer’s

October 17, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains anxiety and agitation in someone with Alzheimer’s may be caused by their inability to negotiate new information or stimuli as well as by their medical conditions and/or medication interactions. To properly deal with the problem, it is recommend the person go through a thorough medical evaluation.

If it is determined the agitation is most likely from the Alzheimer’s disease, assess what is going on in the person’s life such as any changes in their living situation or with their caregiver. Keep in mind a television or other loud background noises can trigger agitation in someone with Alzheimer’s. Experts say to lessen anxiety create a calm environment. This may mean moving them into a quieter place, and/or using soothing rituals or a security object. Other methods include going for a walk, putting on music and dancing. If you have a view to the outside, look out the window at a tree, a bird or a flower.

Use calm words when talking to a person exhibiting anxiety. Try asking them what you can do to help or telling them you will stay with them until they feel better. Reassure them that they are safe. Keep your voice calm and refrain from criticizing or arguing or sounding angry. Creating a daily routine is helpful as is having activities on-hand to engage the person.

At MorningStar at North Ridge, our dementia caregivers are trained in methods to help calm or stimulate residents as situations require. Enjoy Gardening in Containers or Raised Beds

October 17, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

For many people in apartments, condos, or small patio homes, having a large garden in not feasible, and even for home-owners with large yards, an extensive gardening space may be simply too much work. This is where container gardening and raised bed gardening allows a person the satisfaction of growing something that is good to eat.

While it doesn’t matter if you use terracotta, wood, or plastic pots, make sure they have enough depth and room for the particular plants. Gardening experts say the best way to give your plants a good start is to buy a good quality potting soil containing manure, sand, perlite, or vermiculite. They warn against using soil from your backyard as it may be contaminated from an earlier time, and most likely not have the nutrients your plants need to thrive.

For beginner gardeners, TV personality and landscape designer Carson Arthur recommends starting with herbs. He says herbs like mint, thyme, cilantro, and basil are simple to grow, and do not require too much water. If you do expand your choices, Arthur advises to think about your growing conditions. For example, if you want to grow tomatoes, how much sun do they require each day and how much does your space get?

Additionally, keep track of what was planted in a particular pot from year to year as some plants use a lot of the soil’s nutrients. To use the same pots to grow tomatoes in again, experts say you will have to replenish the soil with calcium. Another tip is to research what plants pair together well. One excellent pairing is tomatoes and onions. Not only do they do well but onions provide tomatoes with protection against insects. Another good mix is planting various vegetables from the cabbage family together.

The Benefits of Walking for Exercise

October 15, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

The former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Thomas Frieden, is quoted as saying that walking is "the closest thing we have to a wonder drug.” Many in the medical profession agree. While it is universally acknowledged that any exercise is beneficial to our overall health, walking offers some unexpected advantages.

A study from a group of Harvard scientists concluded that walking seems to counteract the effects of weight-promoting genes. The project involved looking at “32 obesity-promoting genes in over 12,000 people to determine how much the genes actually contribute to body weight.” Within the group of participants who walked briskly for an hour a day, researchers found the effects of the weight-promoting genes were cut in half.

Another surprising result of walking is it was shown to actually diminish a person’s sweet tooth. In a recent study out of the University of Exeter, researchers found walking appears to curb cravings for chocolate and other sugary treats. Their study showed even 15 minutes of walking a day could reduce the habit of eating sweets when stressed.

While doctors recognize any physical exercise is beneficial to reducing the risk of breast cancer, an American Cancer Society study found women who walked seven or more hours a week “had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer than those who walked three hours or fewer per week.” Researchers say walking helped decrease a woman’s risk for breast cancer even when she had an increased risk due to obesity or supplemental hormones. Other studies show walking helps to reduce joint pain and lubricates and strengthens muscles as well as boost the immune system.

Your Diet May be a Key to Better Cognitive Health

October 15, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

Recent research suggests diet plays an important role in protecting seniors’ cognitive health. A Rush University Medical Center study reports older adults may benefit from following the MIND diet even when they develop abnormal clumps of proteins, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, known as amyloid plaques and tangles.

The MIND diet is a hybrid of the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets. The Mediterranean diet is based on regions around the Mediterranean Sea and relies on plant-based foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices and olive oil. DASH is a heart-healthy diet based on whole grains, vegetable, fruits, fish, poultry, beans, nuts, and vegetable oils. It limits sugars and foods high in saturated fats.

The Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center's ongoing Memory and Aging Project began in 1997 and has followed 569 participants for several decades. In 2004, participants were asked to include the foods they consumed from the MIND’s 15 dietary components, such as 10 “brain-healthy food groups” and five unhealthy groups. Annual evaluations and cognitive tests were administered to assess memory and cognitive problems. Klodian Dhana, MD, PhD, lead author of the study, say, "Some people have enough plaques and tangles in their brains to have a postmortem diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, but they do not develop clinical dementia in their lifetime." He adds that our study suggests the “MIND diet is associated with better cognitive functions independently of brain pathologies related to Alzheimer's disease.”

Looking for a Less Stressful Way to Walk?

September 16, 2021 by MorningStar Living in Senior Living

If you are like a lot of other older adults, you may suffer from stiff joints and sore muscles. Rather than letting this prevent you from exercising, doctors say it is more important than ever to stay physically active. The key is to finding the right type of exercise.

Fitness experts point to Nordic walking as a perfect full body workout for older adults. Starting out as a way for cross-country skiers to stay in shape during the summertime, it uses special poles to harness the power of the upper body to propel you forward as you walk. It is recommended you learn the proper technic from a qualified instructor.

The benefit of Nordic walking is it is easy on the joints, provides a full body workout without pain and stress, and can be done by people of all fitness levels. The British Nordic Walking organization says, “Nordic Walking combines the simplicity of walking with core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing.” Benefits include:

  • Burning around 20% more calories compared to walking without poles.

  • Releasing tension in your neck and shoulders.

  • Improving your posture and gait.

  • Strengthening your back and abdominal muscles.

  • Reducing the impact on your joints.

At MorningStar at Silver Lake, we know your independence is important and we offer all the services and amenities to ensure a carefree lifestyle. Our community has a variety of spacious floorplans for independent and assisted living, including studio and one- and two-bedroom configurations.

Moreover our maintenance-free lifestyle gives you the chance to begin new adventures, meet a broader community of like-minded individuals and enjoy your precious retirement years to the fullest. We invite you to visit our website and browse through our extensive information.
