The Benefits of Acupuncture for Senior Pain Management

March 28, 2025 by MorningStar Living in memory care

When it comes to managing chronic pain, many seniors in memory care with the help of staff are exploring alternative therapies like acupuncture. This ancient practice, which involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body, has gained popularity for its ability to relieve discomfort naturally.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated in traditional Chinese medicine and is based on the idea that the body’s energy, or “qi” (pronounced “chee”), flows through pathways called meridians. By stimulating specific points, acupuncture helps restore balance and promote healing.

But don’t let the needles scare you—they’re incredibly thin, and most people feel little to no discomfort during treatment.

How Acupuncture Helps Seniors

Pain Relief Without Medication

Acupuncture has been shown to reduce pain associated with arthritis, backaches, and even neuropathy. For our seniors in memory care Albuquerque looking to minimize their reliance on pain medications, it’s a natural alternative.

Reduced Inflammation

By improving circulation and stimulating the body’s natural healing processes, acupuncture can help reduce inflammation—a key factor in chronic pain conditions.

Stress Reduction

Chronic pain often goes hand-in-hand with stress or anxiety. Acupuncture sessions are known to promote relaxation and improve mood, helping seniors feel more at ease.

Better Sleep

Many of our seniors in memory care Albuquerque report improved sleep after acupuncture treatments. By addressing both physical and emotional discomfort, it helps the body relax into restful slumber.

What to Expect at an Acupuncture Session

For first-timers, the idea of acupuncture can feel intimidating. Here’s what to expect:

  • Consultation: The practitioner will discuss your pain points and overall health.

  • Relaxation: You’ll lie on a comfortable table while the acupuncturist places needles in specific spots.

  • The Treatment: Needles stay in place for about 20–30 minutes while you relax—some people even doze off!

Common Questions About Acupuncture

Does it hurt?

Most people feel only a slight tingling or warmth where the needles are placed. Many describe the experience as relaxing.

How many sessions are needed?

This varies depending on the condition, but some seniors notice improvements after just a few visits.

Is it safe for seniors?

Yes, acupuncture is considered safe when performed by a licensed practitioner, but always consult your doctor before starting any new treatment.

March 24, 2025 by MorningStar Living in memory care

MorningStar at North Ridge offers experienced, compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia right through to the most advanced stages.  We understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of a dementia disease.  The path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on this unexpected journey.

Our beautiful home consists of 38 studio and companion suites with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  The community is specifically designed to be secure but still allows residents the freedom to move safely about their spacious surroundings.  Also, given the nature of dementia, residents pay one price for the suite and their care regardless of the level of memory loss.

As dementia care experts, our unique approach and philosophy to caring for those living with the disease is called Lavender Sky.   We know the essence of the person remains despite the level of memory loss, and our job is to nurture and support the individual by finding ways to calm or stimulate as the situation demands.  Lavender Sky provides the path for us to enter, embrace, and explore the “purple world” of memory loss, and to cross over the physical, emotional, and relational boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

Every aspect of our home is designed to provide the comfort, wellness and safety our special residents require, including mealtimes.  We know those suffering from memory loss can sometimes have compromised abilities at the table.  We address this by providing a selection of finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

Please contact us or visit our website for more information.  To see firsthand our loving memory care in Albuquerque, we encourage you to schedule a tour.

Spices That May Lower Your Risk for Dementia

March 21, 2025 by MorningStar Living in memory care

Research from the UK reports there are things we can do that may influence our risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s Research UK states some of the things that shape our risk like our age and our genes can’t be changed. “But others, like our diet and the things we do to challenge our brains, can be.” They go on to say the latest evidence suggests up to 40% of all cases of dementia are linked to factors we may be able to influence.

A tasty way which could decrease our risk is to enhance our daily meals with the addition of several spices. The first of these spices is turmeric, which research shows has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric contains an active, natural compound (polyphenol) called curcumin and is part of what gives turmeric its yellow hue. Mary-Eve Brown, an oncology clinical dietitian/nutritionist at Johns Hopkins Medicine, says some research shows a decrease in pain for patients with osteoarthritis when eating turmeric in recipes. Doctors suggest getting turmeric naturally in your diet is healthier than taking supplements.

The world’s most expensive spice, saffron, is also associated with health benefits including reducing depression symptoms and improving cognitive function; and gives food seasoned with it a golden hue color. The commonly used pepper is another spice on the list of beneficial foods as it may improve brain function and lower depression symptoms. Its value increases when used with turmeric as it “improves the bioavailability of nutrients in other foods, meaning your body absorbs more of the good stuff from what you eat.” Studies find another common spice, sage, may improve memory in low amounts.

The Connection Between Hydration and Joint Health

February 28, 2025 by MorningStar Living in memory care

Most people know that staying hydrated is important for overall health, but did you know it plays a crucial role in keeping your joints pain-free? As we age, our joints naturally lose moisture, which can lead to stiffness, discomfort, and even arthritis-related pain. For seniors living in memory care in Albuquerque, making hydration a priority can mean the difference between moving freely and struggling with everyday activities.

Why Hydration Matters for Joint Health

Joints rely on synovial fluid, a gel-like substance that cushions bones and reduces friction. This fluid is mostly made up of water, so when you’re dehydrated, it becomes less effective—leading to stiffness and discomfort. Proper hydration helps:

  • Lubricate joints – Prevents bones from rubbing together painfully.

  • Reduce inflammation – Flushes out toxins that contribute to joint pain.

  • Support cartilage health – Keeps the tissue between bones strong and flexible.

When water intake is low, the body pulls moisture from other areas—including your joints—which can increase stiffness and soreness.

“After a few weeks, I noticed a real difference,” Mary said. “My joints didn’t feel as stiff in the morning, and I could move around more easily. I had no idea something as simple as water could make such an impact!”

How Much Water Should Seniors Drink?

A general rule of thumb is eight 8-ounce glasses per day, but seniors in memory care may need more depending on their activity level, diet, and medications. Some good ways to stay hydrated include:

  • Drinking water consistently – Sip throughout the day instead of waiting until you’re thirsty.

  • Eating water-rich foods – Cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, and soups can help boost hydration.

  • Limiting dehydrating drinks – Caffeine and alcohol can cause fluid loss, so balance them with extra water.

  • Using reminders – Set alarms or keep a log to track daily intake.

Small Changes, Big Relief

In memory care staying hydrated isn’t just about quenching thirst—it’s about keeping joints mobile and pain-free. If you’ve been feeling extra stiff lately, try increasing your water intake for a few weeks and see how your body responds.

Sleep Problems May Elevate Stroke Risk

February 24, 2025 by MorningStar Living in memory care

A study published in the journal Neurology reports analyzed data from more than 4,500 people participating in INTERSTROKE, a large international case-control study of patients who have experienced a stroke. One of the findings from the study is “people who slept less than five hours a night on average were three times more likely to have a stroke than those who got seven hours of sleep — the recommended minimum for adults.” They also found sleeping more than nine hours a day accounted for a two-fold increase in risk for stroke.

Doctors say the study is in line with other research linking poor quality of sleep to high blood pressure as well as impairments to blood vessels, both risk factors for stroke. A director of the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern Medical School, Dr. Phyllis Zee, explains things like fragmented sleep and sleep apnea impact a person’s ability to regulate metabolism, blood pressure and inflammation as well as increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease and dementia. Again all risk factors for stroke.

Experts say there are steps we can take to improve our quality of sleep. One of the first things is to make your bedroom a room of rest and not the place where you watch TV or read books. Make sure the room is dark at night, and maintain a regular bedtime. Get in the habit of waking at the same time each day. Avoid drinking alcohol at least three hours before bedtime, and expose yourself to morning light. Studies show it may be more beneficial to exercise early in the day.

MorningStar at North Ridge, memory care is devoted to individualized care for those with mild to advanced memory impairment.  Our community is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages and supports their independence while keeping them safe.   If you have a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, please visit our website for more information about our experienced, compassionate memory care in Albuquerque.

Does Your Loved One With Memory Impairment Need More Care?

December 27, 2024 by MorningStar Living in memory care

The US News & World Reports, states, “More than 6 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s disease according to the Alzheimer’s Association. More than 11 million family members care for someone with dementia, while others with memory issues live in assisted living communities, nursing homes or memory care units.”

The decline of a person with Alzheimer’s disease slowly worsens over time; and it is not always easy for family members to recognize their loved one needs additional support for both their safety and daily living activities. Healthcare providers say a memory care community may be called for if the person exhibits subtle behavioral changes in personality, declining health and an increase in confusion. Incontinence is another reason families turn to memory care. Moreover, the family caregiver should be considered as increasing needs can lead to caregiver burnout. Also, memory care provides peace of mind if your loved one is no longer answering their phone or replying to emails.

For some, Alzheimer’s can bring with it dramatic and challenging behavior changes. Your gentle spirited mom or dad may start to exhibit aggressive behaviors that are difficult to deal with. A generally outgoing person may withdraw and avoid socializing. Hygiene can be hit and miss, and often the person no longer changes clothes or brushes their hair or teeth.

Other behaviors that change over time can make family caregiving increasingly difficult and time-consuming. Physical safety concerns such as wandering, forgetting to turn off the stove, burning themselves or still driving can be a constant worry.

Memory care communities like MorningStar at North Ridge are equipped to handle these challenges. To begin with, the physical makeup of our community is designed to safeguard residents from harm and includes secure doors, enclosed courtyards and easy-to-navigate surroundings.

All MorningStar’s compassionate, dedicated team receives training to provide the best care.  In addition, residents are encouraged to participate in a variety of purposeful activities that include music, life skills, art, entertainment and exercise as well as special events and outings. We invite you to schedule a tour to experience firsthand our philosophy and commitment to care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

Changing Habits to Lessen Your Risk of Alzheimer's Disease

October 28, 2024 by MorningStar Living in memory care

As we age, more of us worry about ourselves or a loved one getting Alzheimer’s disease. Currently the disease does not have a cure but there are several medications that help mitigate symptoms, and a few more promising treatments on the horizon. That being said, it is still a disease none of us wish to experience.

Many people are aware of studies showing a good diet and exercise are not only good for heart health but also good for maintaining cognitive health. Additionally, Jessica Caldwell, a neuropsychologist and director of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement Prevention Center at the Cleveland Clinic, told AARP there are lesser-known things people can do to strengthen cognitive health. She explains it involves letting go of some bad habits and replacing them with healthier ones.

One suggestion is to try and limit negative thoughts. A study reports “participants who repeatedly dwelled on negative thoughts had more amyloid and tau deposits in their brain, the biological markers of Alzheimer’s disease.” While we all have spent time thinking about bad things happening or that have happened, experts say repeatedly focusing on negative thoughts may put us at a greater risk for Alzheimer’s.

Another easy way to lessen your risk for Alzheimer’s is to get vaccinated. Paul Schulz, M.D., a neurologist at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, reported on a nationwide study, which found adults over 65 who received at least one influenza vaccination were 40 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Another study found a 25 to 30 percent reduction in Alzheimer’s for seniors in memory care who had a pneumonia vaccination.

Other studies link an increase in the risk for Alzheimer’s to consuming sugary drinks (including fruit juices – better to eat the fruit). Researchers say it can lead to spiking blood sugar and an exaggerated insulin response, which may trigger chronic inflammation in the brain.

MorningStar Memory Care at North Ridge offers care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. We provide our residents a safe, comforting physical environment, trained caregivers, daily health monitoring, meaningful activities, wellness programs and more. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar at North Ridge brings a unique vision to senior living with our mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. We create a true home for residents within an ideal setting and invite you to schedule a tour to see firsthand our loving memory care in Albuquerque.
